My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Due to the village ordinance change in Wood Dale, I am over my pet/foster home limit and because Dantes takes a while to warm up to new people and his house training issues, he is in danger of being put to sleep. Dantes is probably 11 years old and the ideal home would be with a retired person that can let him out and walk him once a day. He needs to be rehomed by October 10th otherwise he will need to be put to sleep. He doesn't deserve that. Please help me save his life and call 630-694-1359 if you can help. Lisa

Dantes has been waiting over 3 years to find his forever home. He is doing well in foster care but will need a patient loving single woman as his perfect adopter. He is so affectionate and loyal but some things still tend to frighten him so a quieter home with one person or a pair of women would be ideal. He really is precious.

Chicagoland is VERY dog friendly. About 15 minutes from IBR HQ is one of the greatest dog parks--East Branch Dog training. This is BIRDDOG HEAVEN. Dantes, Rosa, Rory, Lani and Jules made their debuts there recently and enjoyed every minute of it. Take a look at their album on Facebook .

Here is a very fun romping, splashing Youtube video of Dantes, Rosa and Jules.

I need active outgoing adopters for these amazing dogs. Pointer and Setter= FUN! I am addicted to their joyfulness and enthusiasm.

Spring 2010 Hot Setter + mud puddle= HAPPY DOGGIE!! Dantes just continues to get more confident and happy as he gets healthier. This past weekend we went for a romp at the local dog park. Good times!! He was such a good boy while he got his shampoo too. With a kind hearted gentle adopter, Dantes will be the most loyal and devoted companion. Truly--he's like a CAT!! Dantes rubs up against you, follows you to every room and loves to sleep on top of you. He is such a special boy. Here are more photos of him from Facebook

Edmond Dantes is our latest tragedy. Our Count was rescued from his confinement at Sangamon County Animal Control in Springfield, IL. Further vetting showed he is fighting Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever (tick borne illnesses). Like our tragic hero--Dantes is bitter and angry about his unfortunate circumstances, but we are hopeful once he is treated, he will overcome his sad circumstances and find his forever home.

Dantes will need a very patient foever home. While he is doing fantastic--the damage is done. He still has some autistic like behaviors and any changes to his world may make him anxious. He is so loving tho--like a kitty! He's wonderful!! OH and he needs a bird feeder in his yard as he LOVES to point tweeties!!

Due to the fact that these dogs have come from shelters or abuse or neglect situations, and unless we have tested these dogs on upland birds and feel they are confident and ready to work as a hunter with families where they will be trained with kindness and patience, we will only adopt to pet homes.

All adoptions include vaccinations, fecals and deworming, microchips, spaying or neutering, collar, leash and an information adoption packet. All dogs and puppies are also tested for Lyme Disease, Ehrlichia and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever via a $100 blood test. On average nearly 83% of our incoming dogs and puppies from the Midwest are testing positive to one, two or all three tick borne illnesses. If caught early- these diseases are highly treatable. Infected Dog and Deer Ticks are all over the Midwest and United States and these diseases often go missed yet are epidemic. Left untreated- dogs may suffer horrible painful joints, brain damage, chronic allergies, and if the disease progresses- death.

All IBR dogs in foster care are learning to be crate trained, housebroken, socialized with other dogs and loved on by their human foster parents. Adoption fees are used to cover vetting expenses and special need dogs' vetting care. Our adoption guidelines also require non-smoking homes and safe fenced in yards.

If you are interested in adopting this pet through our rescue organization, please go to the Adopting A Friend section to read about our pre-adoption policies and vetting protocols.

Please help us reach our fundraising goal so we can continue our work helping save these homeless hunters and other abused and neglected dogs and puppies! We have a long way to go and any amount --big or small--will make a huge difference especially if the dog or puppy is in an area where they use gas chambers to euthanize. We see the worst that humans can do to defenceless animals- but with your donation- we will be able to do more to end the suffering of many frightened dogs and puppies.

Others Ways You Can Make a Difference

Shop for 2011 custom calendars, mugs and T-shirts at our Café Press fundraising website and choose merchandise featuring Pointers, Setters, Hunting Dogs or Friendly Mutts. All of our calendar stars are rescued dogs that would have been euthanized in shelters across the Mid-West had IBR not stepped in to save them. Your support does make a difference!!

Help offset the high cost of our vetting bills via the Petfinder.com Sponsor-A-Pet link. Illinois Birddog Rescue has always prided itself in not turning away any sick and injured dogs; animals that most shelters would have euthanized. We have saved many dogs with heartworm, tick borne illnesses, broken legs, missing legs, blind dogs, a new deaf puppy, dogs suffering from Parvo and especially senior dogs that may need expensive health care to help them get ready for adoption. In February of 2006, in one weekend, we brought in 20+ dogs from the Boat Mountain Tragedy, and that depleted our emergency funds.

Your donation will not go unnoticed. In addition to helping save lives, when you donate your name will be added to the Illinois Birddog Rescue Donations and Rescue Sponsor List.
