My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Coal is a lab mix who came from a very high kill shelter. Coal is a young boy, about 1 ½ to 2 years old and has had a really bad start to his very short life. He is a victim of animal abuse. Here is his story by the people who cared about him: He had been so badly abused he cowered in the corner, hid under his bed or blanket and would not make eye contact. It took weeks to gain his trust enough just to let us pet him. Slowly we gained his trust. As of now, Coal is being socialized and obedience trained by inmates at Correctional Industrial Facility along with several other dogs, in a program referred to as FIDO (Faith + Inmates + Dogs = Independence). He has learned the 5 basic commands - sit, stay, come, lie down and heel. Coal is still a very timid boy, but with the love and care of the inmates he is getting better and better every day. He loves other dogs and he is learning to play and loves his ball. It will take a very special home for this boy, but once he finds it he will make a wonderful, loving companion. He deserves so much better than he was given at the beginning of his life. Coal has been neutered, heartworm negative, up to date on vaccinations including rabies and will be micro-chipped. He is also crate trained. If you have a very loving and compassionate heart and a world of patience and would like to find out more about Coal, please indicate him in the notes section of our online application
