My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATED BIO 06/08/2011: Violet is a sweet 3 year old 11 lb little girl who is thriving in her foster home. Violet is making a remarkable recovery. Her skin is beginning to clear up, and we know that in due time her beautiful coat will grow back in. Violet loves to go for walks, loves to play fetch, loves squeaky toys, and can entertain herself for hours. She doesn't seem to know how to play with other dogs, and she'd do well as an only dog or with a laid back furbuddy. She has a great attitude and is full of love (and gives kisses to prove it). We think Violet will be ready by late August (maybe sooner, but we're being realistic considering how she looked when she was rescued.) Could she be the girl for you?

INITIAL BIO 05/28/2011: Violet is the latest pup with demodectic (non-contagious mange) to be rescued by UYR. She is only 3 years old and a skinny 10 lb, but has had a rough life so far. Violet was rescued from a high-kill shelter with a terrible case of mange. How any owner could let her skin condition get so far is incomprehensible to us. She is a sweetheart of a dog. She is so affectionate and friendly. It's as if she has lost no trust of mankind. Violet has started an intense therapy of oral antibiotics, shampoos, and oral medications to treat the mange.
For those of you who do not know, Demodectic Mange is a non-contagious skin condition. It is present in all dogs in undetectable numbers, but in some dogs, when they are stressed, the tiny mites that live in the hair follicle overmultiply and cause hair loss and secondary skin infections. However, once the stress (like being homeless, being left outside in the elements, etc) is gone, and the mange is treated, it's very possible that the demodex will not come back (though it is possible). On our happy tails page, Halee, Sandee, Ginger, Henry, and Chancey are just some of the recent dogs we have rescued with Demodex (nd you can see how gorgeous they turned out!!)
Violet is working on her housetraining and seems to be catching on. She loves to play with toys. She will likely be happy as an only pup or with another laid back dog. She will be spayed in a few weeks once her skin condition improves. (The lack of hormone fluctuation will actually improve the mange.... so spaying helps a lot). She likely won't be ready for adoption for at least 2-4 months so stay tuned!
