My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 7/30/11

Jason is an adorable 3-5 year old Golden Retriever/Beagle mix. He was found as a stray after a tornado hit the Tuscaloosa area of AL where 43 people lost their lives and hundreds of pets were also killed. The poor little fellow was found on a pile of rubble all scared and bewildered by kind man named Jason. And so, in his honor, this pup was named. Tuscaloosa is home to the University of Alabama and Jason was found with his Crimson Tide collar on. While the cuts on his face healed, this sweet dog stayed at the shelter for over a month waiting for his family to claim him, but no one ever came.

Jason is missing his family and just wants to be loved again. He takes every chance to soak up all the love and affection he can from the foster family who is taking care of him. He is wonderful with the family's 8 year old son and 15 year old daughter and enjoys getting belly rubs from them. He is calm when meeting children and greets them calmly and lovingly. Jason enjoys the company of most other smaller dogs and handles cats just fine, but loves people beyond everything else. Jason also loves Nylabones and Kongs with peanut butter.

Jason is approximately 40 pounds and is a very easy-going dog. He excellent in the car and just sits there and enjoys the ride. The foster family is working on Jason’s leash skills as he becomes very excited when he sees squirrels and small critters while walking. He knows how to shake his head and go side to side to try to get out of the collar, so use of a slip lead is critical. Jason likes people food enough to remind you with his paw or jump up to tell you that he wants to share some, but this is not surprising for a dog that has had to fend for himself for some time. He has been through something most of us cannot imagine - surviving a tornado and losing his family.

So what is Jason's ideal home like? We think that an experienced dog owner who can give him the discipline he needs coupled with the love and attention he craves would be idyllic. Jason’s Beagle lineage yields a bit of a stubbornness, but his Golden roots generate a Velcro dog who just wants to please. He would enjoy a small dog to play with. Children at home or in the neighborhood would make this guy exquisitely happy. A fenced yard would be a plus. Jason is a moderate energy fellow and currently enjoys a couple of one-mile walks daily. He is heartworm negative and appears to have been a beloved pet. He has won the hearts of everyone he has met and is just so eager to be cherished again. We don’t know what happened to Jason’s family but we do know he is a survivor and deserves a second chance at a good life. PLEASE APPLY for Jason by submitting an application via this online link: APPLY ON-LINE TO ADOPT through our rescue.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
