My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Amber, a beautiful Red and White 5 year old who needs all of our help. Amber is a beautiful, happy dog who loves life and has shown all who have met her that she wants to live. She meets everyone with a great smile and gets along well with everyone, adults, children, and all other dogs. All this in spite of the excruciating pain she is in since hurting her back in mid-September which has left her partially paralyzed in her hind legs.
Amber drags herself around with her front legs. This has caused another problem in that the tops of her rear paws are covered with friction sores. She still wants to play with her foster family members and makes every attempt to get to the door when she needs to go potty.

Amber’s mother contacted Arizona Basset Hound Rescue when she learned the only hope for Amber was surgery. As much as she didn’t want to she gave Amber to AZBHR so that Amber could receive the medical treatment she needed and most probably walk again.
The estimate that AZBHR has received from the Neurosurgeon is just above $5000. Won’t you help us to help Amber walk again. She is a trooper and has the heart of a lion. Her will to live is extraordinary and we all agree Amber deserves the surgery and the hope to walk pain free once again.

Update 1/20/07: Amber continues to show improvement every day. Amber can now, with the help of little steps my boys made, get on the couch. So now she and her partner in crime (Mr. Deeds, her foster brother basset) can take up both the couches. Amber's foster kitten was adopted first day back at the shelter and within 5 minutes of opening. She took such good care of him that I wouldn't expect anything else. Now she has three Pomeranian/long hair Chihuahua puppies. She wasn't too sure of them at first. But she now has taken them under her ears and they are all hers now. She’s taking really good care of them too. Now to the most exciting part that brought me to the computer today. Amber tried to jump up on me. See Mr. Deeds, whom needs some more training on jumping on people, teaches bad habits. I came home from a LONG day and even longer night and when I sat on the couch she started bouncing trying to jump up like Deeds was doing. She actually got some air too. And even though it was just about an inch off the ground on the third bounce I think it was just the most exciting thing. She thought so to. You could see she was so happy and then she ran around telling everyone. And yes she’s actually running around these days without falling, well unless one of her foster puppies gets under her feet by accident. I don't know who yells louder, the trampled puppies or Amber trying to get my attention so I can check on them and give them right back so she can do a once over. Other than that...like that is little news....she’s doing so well. Since the time she went to see the healer, she has been running and letting us know she needs to go outside to potty. She went for her first walk walk last week. We didn't make it too far. All of the neighbor kids want to pet her and she sucked it all up. Amber is up on her legs more than down. She sleeps in the kids beds that now have NO frame and sit on the floor so they can be closer to the dogs. But the best part is Amber is always happy. She smiles and tries to wage her tail. That of course does knock her over, but she’s a trooper and gets back up and does it again. She will begin “pool physical therapy” next week. This should help develop more strength, movement and balance in her back end.

Update 2/10/07: Amber had her MRI and the results show that NO SURGERY is indicated. She has suffered two significant blows to her spine but each area is healing well. She was evaluated by Jeff Flocker, a Physical Therapist with Canine Physical Rehabilitation of the Southwest, on January 30th. Mr. Flocker stated that Amber's Foster Mom has been, and continues, doing such a great job that he sees no reason to do more Physical Therapy or Pool Therapy with Amber. Rather, he showed Amber's Foster Mom a few more exercises and sent them home to continue with the good work.
