Xocai's Information:

Xocai “Nico” is a happy, well-adjusted, 6 month old Akita puppy that has had a rough start in his short life. Xocai was surrendered to a shelter in Ft. Worth, Texas, with his left eye out of the socket. Unfortunately the shelter veterinarians were unable to repair it and had to remove the eye. Nico’s right eye appears to have scar tissue covering the cornea, which is blocking his field of vision, and he will have surgery on 7/14/11 to hopefully make him able to have more vision in that eye. The Akita is the largest of the six Japanese Spitz-type dogs. For many years, Akitas were used in male/female pairs to hunt bear, boar and deer. They were also kept by the aristocracy and wealthy people as guardians and pets. The Akita is a noble breed – dignified, intelligent, loyal, devoted, courageous and aloof with strangers. Akitas can adapt to many different situations and can be marvelous watchdogs (typically not barking unless there’s a good reason) and companions. They require socialization and obedience training as puppies. Akitas are strong willed dogs with proud egos and generally don’t do well with dogs of the same sex. They won’t stand for mistreatment and will resent forceful or heavy- handed training tactics sometimes used on large breeds. This is not the breed for the first time owner. The Akita is a large and powerful dog. The males, when mature, are generally 26-28 inches at the shoulder and weigh approximately 90-120 lbs. Females are 23-25 inches and weigh between 70-90 lbs. Akitas are versatile and revered companions capable of loving and protecting their families for many years. The Akita is a liberal combination of kindness, courage and alertness. They can be extraordinarily affectionate to those that are a part of their family and with their disposition and loving nature, they have won the hearts of all fortunate enough to “be owned” by an Akita. If you think you are able to provide the perfect home for Xocai and would like to “be owned” by this very special Akita, please fill out our adoption application .
