My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Charlie is a handsome two year old male that is coming into rescue from a local shelter. Charlie is very sweet and affectionate. He is on the thin side, so he will need a home to work with him on proper nutrition so he can gain a few pounds. He does not appear to have had any training, as he does not know his basic commands and he can be rude when greeting people by jumping up and pulling on the leash, so Charlie’s new forever home will be required to attend obedience training with him. He has lived with another dog and seems to be good with other dogs. He has also lived with children, but has shown a tendency to be protective and nippy towards them, so we will be looking to place Charlie in a home with older children or no children. update: Copyright (C) 2010 The Boxer Rescue, Inc. For the most part, Charlie is doing great. He has a great personality, very sweet and playful. He is very smart and eager to please. In the first day, he learned "down". I started on the first night teaching him "wait", for food, for getting out of the car, etc. Today is our 5th full day with him and he's pretty much got the "wait" command down. He does not jump out of the car until he's released to do so (though, he does think about it).... a work in progress.

Today's big lesson was on "leave it". His prey drive is strong and the cat nearly got caught yesterday. It does look like he would bite if he got a hold of the cat. He's not being mean, it's just a movable toy that needs to be conquered and shook... which would be a problem for the cats, so "leave it" will be emphasized continually and rewarded over the next several days/weeks while dealing with the introductions to the cat. Tonight, he did see the cat in the same room with him, he was called and told to "leave it" and he turned away from the cat and came to me. BIG rewards and a treat followed. He might get it, but it might be a constant training review for him to not follow his drive. We'll see how it goes.

I can see where someone could mistake some of his excited playfulness with nipping. We were outside in the yard yesterday, and our neighbor's kids came over to meet Charlie. They've met boxers before and know to stay calm, standstill, and present the back of a hand to sniff etc. He was fine with the older girl (9), but he mouthed the boy's hand (7), which looked like a nip to me. I asked him if he felt the dog's teeth on that and he said no, just his mouth. The kids stayed just about 15 min with us in the yard with him. We'll try again in another couple of days. He's been fine with my daughter (7).

I have a busy house... and we had visitors here the day after he arrived (not something I could've rescheduled) so there were an extra 6 ladies or so here. He greeted everyone eagerly, did not jump up until he saw my Kia jump once. Otherwise, he was excited but very well behaved.

He's walking well on a leash. I got a harness for him and he is very manageable with that. There is some initial excited pulling at first, but with a couple of tugs and correction, he settles quickly and the leash remains pretty loose. On Monday, I took him along with my two dogs, our usual Monday walk with the girls (usually 2 girls that I work with and their dogs - one each - at the local ball field complex with a half-mile walking path. Monday, I only had one of the girls show up with her Lab/German Sheppard mix (Shadow)... so we had four dogs walking the path together. After the initial settling period (2-3 min of sniffing grass, targeted pee'ing), the dogs were all walking well together without issue... it went very well!

Charlie is just about done with his ear infection medications. He is very compliant about putting the ear drops in, and I thank God every day for the inventor of Pill Pockets!!! He gobbles those down like a rare delicacy!! He is eating well and seems to have no food aggression. He eats in the same room with the other two without issue, and this morning while he was eating, I took the bowl away well before he was done... no growls, grunts, or any other signs of agitation. I'll be putting my hand in the bowl to take food in the next few days to really test that one out, but I'm not really worried about it.

Today (day 5 with us), he was finally left alone in the house with the resident dogs for an hour and 15 min while I took my son to a doctor's appointment. My older daughter (22) got to the house before us and said he was laying on the couch resting when she came in, and nothing in the house was destroyed or out of place..Very Happy! Dog friends seem to be good for Charlie and we’ll try for longer maybe next week and see how it goes.

So for now he is doing well. He is a work in progress, but he's a smart boy and is learning quickly.
