My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Willie was found as an unneutered stray in an urban area July 2011. He was sent to a foster home that was not Dachshund savvy (ie were not familiar with their independent nature, stubbornness, need for structure, aloofness when frightened, etc) and he nipped the man, who he had seemed to be very scared of prior to nipping him. Due to this nipping Willie would no longer be able to be adopted through the animal control as this counted as a "history of biting", so Willie was set to be euthanized. Luckily a few of the staff saw the true Willie and got to be familiar with his very loving self, and were able to put off this euthanasia and reach out to Dachshund savvy rescue groups to save Willie's life.

Willie is about 2 years old, 11lbs and a very sweet boy who needs some structure in his thus far unstructured life. He is fearful of men initially when he is off leash as it seems he may have been kicked and otherwise abused by a man in the past (he appears frightened and watches their shoes carefully). He is very well mannered on leash, good for baths and nail trims, and good with his food around people and dogs. Despite his tough, unstructured dearly life Willie is a special little guy who is very intelligent and eager to learn, and please.

Willie is being rehabilitated with us and learning he can trust men too! He had a poor coat when we first got him, and it now gleams jet black and is soft instead of coarse as it was before!
