My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Looking for a BC who is just right? Meet Laddy!! Loving without being overbearing, fun without being too wild, Laddy is a lovely combination of sensitivity, silliness, and spunk with a sprinkle of BC quirkyness thrown in for good measure. Sure to make a devoted companion, if you are looking for a new best friend, Laddy could be a great choice!

Picked up as a stray in Utah, then on to a crowded shelter, Laddy’s past is a total mystery. Likely a well-loved pet at one time, when his microchip only turned up nothing but dead ends, WBCR stepped in to help. Rescue is full of surprises and Laddy is a great example. Imagine our shock when this supposed quiet old senior arrived a far younger fellow, ready to play ball! Laddy has been one surprise after another and is truly one of those “if only they could tell us” cases. He’s a sweet boy who does his best to roll with the punches, come what may, and he continues to reveal his true colors with each passing day.

After a few days of settling into life in foster care, the sparkle in his eyes and spring in his step returned. He is a darling dog, so eager and happy to be a part of things, even if it’s just lying at your feet or anywhere he can see you. It’s almost like he can’t believe you want to be his friend– but what’s not to love? So much as a glance in his direction results in a wagging tail, and if he thinks it might be playtime he’ll do a little happy dance at your feet. Laddy is politely friendly with new people, quick to roll over for belly rubs, and he really loves to be with his human friends, whatever they are doing. He also LOVES playing soccer with a basketball, which he will tackle enthusiastically time and time again if you can manage to kick it past him! He is also prone to picking up an object – a bone, a leaf – doing a giant play bow, then running off shaking his find - if you chase him, all the better! He’s ready at the drop of a hat to go – but only if you are, too, and he is always turning around to make sure you are following on every “adventure”, even if it’s only time to go out to the yard to pee before bedtime. While he is not a bit herdy with the cat in his foster home, Laddy does show quite a lot of eye, especially when the other dogs are running or fetching. On a first quick exposure to sheep, he showed some instinct and QUITE a lot of interest. We hope to test him again on livestock in the near future, and won’t be a bit surprised if he wows us, but the jury is still out on that one. We’ll keep you posted!

While he’s generally a pretty level-headed and unreactive fellow, Laddy is surprisingly uncomfortable and afraid around new dogs, especially if they come up close to his face, and he can snap at them defensively if he feels they are too close for comfort. He is learning in his foster home that there is nothing to be afraid of, and with careful management and very slow introductions, Laddy is learning to coexist with 3 other dogs peaceably. He has already joined the group for off-leash adventures and hanging out in the yard without incident, has started to run alongside the other dogs if they play, and will
occasionally lick one of them on the nose - so it’s not unlikely he could learn to have a few dog friends with careful guidance. However, Laddy is pretty guardy with high value things like food or treats, so an only dog household or adopters willing to manage and work with this if adopted into a multi-dog household will be necessary.

Sweet Laddy is a generally well-mannered fellow, no wild puppy antics, and he’s cratetrained and housetrained, although he will mark a little bit in new places. He’s not bad on leash, will pull some especially on the way back to the car, but an Easy Walk harness helps with that – and yes, he LOVES being in the car!! Like many BCs he especially loves to lunge at the cars coming in the other direction when riding, so depending on what kind of vehicle he’s riding in, management may be key with Laddy as a passenger. In his foster home he rides in a covered crate which really helps prevent him from getting too crazed about the oncoming traffic, although riding in a car where he can’t see out the windows also helps keep him from obsessing over moving cars. Laddy does not, however, show any reactivity to cars passing on the street, or 4 wheelers for that matter, when he is on foot.

And in case you hadn't noticed - yes, he’s terribly handsome too! A striking split face with big dark brown eyes, Laddy also has a magnificent coat – very long, thick, and silky. We think he might be mixed with Rough Collie (think Lassie) or maybe Sheltie…but he has very much a BC nature. For some reason, his mouth parts in front to make it look like he is smiling at you almost all the time! He’s already lost the few extra pounds he arrived with, and he gets livelier & happier by the day. With each passing day he seems to get younger, and he’s in great health. Laddie may be as young as 4 or 5 yet has reached that wonderful point where he can certainly keep up with just about anything, but doesn’t need a ton of daily exercise to settle down. He was pretty underconfident out in the world when he first arrived but is improving every day, and is now really starting to enjoy going for bike rides in quiet, out of the way places or walks in the woods, where he loves to play the scout, running out front of the group then waiting up, then spinning on his heels and taking off running up ahead to discover what may lie in wait!.

Laddy is a lovely fellow who is sure to bring love, light, laughter, and devoted companionship to some lucky family. If you are looking for a sweet boy to share your life with, you’d be hard pressed to find company better than Laddy. He has so much to offer, and will be more than happy to give whoever will love him in return his all. We will be sure to post more about Laddy as he continues to show us who he is!

Laddy is neutered, fully vetted and living in a loving foster home near Jackson, WY.
