Dexter is a rescue from a high volume, high kill shelter where his owners abandoned him after deciding he was too much work. Bigger, black dogs have a hard time finding homes in shelters regardless of what age or breed they are. They are often euthanized when time runs out!

Dexter is an upbeat, energetic and active boy. Dexter is a young pup that has had minimal training. The good news is he IS house trained and crate trained! He is also working on his manners and basic training in his foster home. He is comfy in a crate and should continue being crated at night and when left alone for a while yet. He is good with other dogs and respectful children of any age, he has not been around cats. Sometimes Dexter gets a little too excited and bouncy for young kids, we would prefer he go to a home with no small kids around full time as he can easily knock them over when excited. Dexter is currently fostered with two other large dogs and loves having doggy buddies around, he’d make a great second dog for another active canine. Dexter is coming along really nicely with his training while in foster care. Most of his extra energy is puppy energy. His foster mom makes sure to get him out every day for a good brisk walk and play time at the off leash parks with other dogs as often as possible. When Dexter is able to get a good daily walk he is much calmer and better mannered in the home. Dexter’s new owner would really benefit by taking Dexter to training classes. He’s a great pup with tons of potential for an active family/person. He’s a great hiking and activity partner and is very loyal and listens.

From Dexter’s foster mom:
Dexter is doing well, he has adjusted to living with the 2 other dogs and loves playing with the German Shepherd. I took him to a fenced leach-free dog park and he loved it and comes to his name considerably well. Dexter's energy seems to be more due to him being a pup still. He does mouth hands a bit when he gets excited but it can be easily stopped by giving him a toy to chew on instead.

If you are looking for a loyal, energetic and loving dog Dexter may be the pup for you. With a little patience and training this handsome boy is sure to round out to be the perfect companion. Dexter needs to find a home with a fully fenced yard.
