My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

5 yr old Tadpole come to us very skinny from a shelter where he was scheduled to be put to sleep. He got his name for his big head and long thin body. He had been a stray so we thought he just needed some regular meals. We soon noticed that although he didn't look sick, he really didn't eat much.

Off Tadpole went for lots of expensive vet tests. It appears that Tad has a liver shunt - a condition that renders his liver smaller than normal. Surgery is very expensive and doesn't have very good odds for a positive outcome.

We have therefore decided to not have surgery and to take care of Tadpole until he tells us it is time to go. This could be in a year or five years or ten years. We just don't know how long he will be with us - he could have a full long dachshund life or....?

We are looking for a special home for Tadpole. Because of his condition we cannot have him neutered so his new home needs to take every precaution to ensure he has no chance to reproduce! (There are already more doxies in shelters than we can save and we definitely don't need ones with parents with genetic defects!

Tadpole is a very happy boy. Although a picky eater, he is milling around in the kitchen with the rest of the foster pack when it is time for treats. Tad should be on a low protein diet but any special diet is almost impossible to enforce in his extremely overcrowded foster home, which is one of the reasons we are looking for a new spot for him.

He loves to go for walks. Tad insists that he have a nice blanket in his crate so he can totally wrap up and disappear from sight. Tad is extremely quiet and would be a great apartment dog. He really is an easy boy.

As an individual you can't save the whole world, but you can help us save this one dog.
