My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Update 06/02/12: Ernie had quite a few teeth removed at his dental. The vet recommended he not be neutered due to his advanced age. His legs are still stiff and he walks a little oddly at times, but he gets around pretty well. Ernie needs to go to a family that is home most of the time. He hates being left alone and he doesn't like to be crated. He does enjoy being a part of his pack of brothers and sisters and "running" around with them.

Update 11/18/11: Ernie is nearly through his second, stronger dose of antibiotics and is still waiting for the approval from his vet for dental work. Ernie's poor mouth is in terrible condition. At his last visit, it was determined that he is probably about 14 years old, not the ten we originally thought. He's a great little guy, loves his foster siblings & tries hard to play with these bigger dogs by running (not fast for Ernie) and bumping into them, tail wagging fast and furiously! What a cutie!

Update 11/06/11: Ernie's foster mom took him back to the vet because his eyes weren't quite clearing up as well as hoped, and he is back on an antibiotic....a stronger one this time, because it appears it didn't clear out all the ear mites either. Ernie is such a trooper, a super sweet little guy! The vet says it will be at least three weeks before he will be ready for his neuter and dental surgery. Meanwhile, he's enjoying the good life with his furry foster siblings and foster mom and dad. Oh, and you would never know it, but now the estimate is that he is 12 - 14 years old, rather than the original 10 that we thought.

Update 10/19/11: Ernie is doing very, very well in his foster home & likes to hang out with his foster-mates. His URI has cleared up, and he's getting the remainder of his shots updated today so that he can go for his dental and neutering next. The vet is going to give him a thorough ear-cleaning when his dental work is being done, since he was infested with ear mites when rescued from the shelter. They're gone, but while he's getting the dental, the vet wants to give those ears a thorough cleaning! Soon Ernie will be ready for his furever family. Even though he's about ten years old, he has lots of years and lots of love to give. He's just adorable!

INITIAL BIO - 10/03/11: Ernie was picked up as a stray in Texas and ended up at a high-kill shelter in Fort Worth. When he was rescued by his foster mom a week ago, he was in pretty bad shape. He is still needing care before being ready for adoption, including dental work. He is about ten years old.

"He had dried poop stuck to his rump and such 'goopy' eyes that all the hair around his eyes was matted. Some of his toe nails were curling, they were so long. His ears were full of crud and ear mites that the vet thinks had lived there for years. The few teeth he has are awful. There seems to be more plaque and tartar than teeth. He had a pretty bad runny nose and a cough, and he walked sideways. Oh, and the poor little guy smelled awful!"

After a week of foster care, a bath, and shaved hair around his rear and eyes, he is looking much better. His toenails have been cut and his eyes aren't so goopy any more. He is receiving an antibiotic, & seems just about over his upper respiratory infection, so he is feeling tons better. His ears have been cleaned out, so no more critters are living there. He still walks a bit sideways and his legs seem stiff, but that doesn't stop him from zooming around with the rest of my little pack. Ernie loves to eat treats and his favorite thing is to be near his people. He hates being separated and will bark to let you know! He is an absolute love muffin and would let you hold him for as long as you wanted. He has such a spunky personality. I can't believe anyone ever let him go.
