My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Portia is yet another unclaimed stray from Central CA. She is a supermodel dachshund. This means that although her head and body look 100% doxie (look at those gorgeous long ears!), she has long legs, perfect for walking the runway in Paris or handling stairs in a home or down to a yard.

Portia is extremely loving and if you hold her, she will put her head on your shoulder and just melt into you. She really wants to be special to someone.

Portia has been friendly since she arrived in rescue which is surprising since she came in with a very recent partial tongue amputation. She is missing the very end of her tongue – like it was just sliced off but it most likely happened in a scuffle somehow. To add to this, while being spayed, the vets serendipitously discovered she had managed to get a string from a food package wound tightly around the very back of her tongue. (Discovered only because they were looking at her tongue amputation) Portia and her poor beleaguered tongue are now finally getting back to normal.

Portia is not only friendly with people but she has been fine with all the other dogs – happy to share a crate with anyone. The only thing she gets cranky about is her food bowl. Humans around her bowl are fine but she doesn’t want any of her many foster siblings trying to stick their nose in.

When Portia first arrived in foster care, she just wanted to sleep and eat. As she is recovering from her medical issues and her time on the streets, she is staring to get more interested in what is going on. She really enjoys her walks and is getting the hang of the whole leash concept.

Portia is a quiet dog and other than going out to go potty, she isn’t interested in spending much time outside (been there, done that, thank you). This combined with her legs means she may do well as an apartment dog. We also think Portia would be fine with older, respectful children.

If you are interested in Portia, please fill out an online adoption application at www.scdr.org and email Lindy at linla@comcast.net.
The tax deductible donation for Portia is $250.
