Another month, another concerted effort by the Rawhide volunteer team to pull dogs from the puppy mills, clean them, clip them, innoculate/spay/neuter them, get them their vet checkups, feed them nutritious food for the first time and then bring them into our homes to love and care for them until we can find them new homes. These dogs have had a rough life, and we are happy to welcome them to our homes, but we anxiously await the day that no one buys from pet stores so that we don't have to rescue their parents, brothers and sisters from this unhappy existence.
Penn , a 1 -2 year old JRT was originally named after Sean Penn as he was the bad boy of all our rescues last weekend BUT we are happily mistaken. His name will remane Penn but now after Penn and Teller the comedian/magician duo. He is a typical, active JRT. After he was examined at the vets office and taken off the table he kept jumping up on the table and giving the vet kisses and his belly for rubs. We think that he was snarly more because of being in his crate rather than him being a bad dog. So this one may be more difficult to housebreak because crates are not his favorite thing. Kisses, Belly rubs, snuggles, squeaky toys, running and fetch - now those are a few of his favorite things....
Rawhide Rescue opens its arms to many dogs who are from puppy mills, or large breeding facilities, where dogs are bred for profit and not love. These dogs are routinely killed after their breeding days are over, usually at about age five, but we have been able to rescue dogs from some facilities.
Puppy mill dogs are a special rescue, as they have spent the majority of their lives in cages, and have not been properly socialized around humans. Each dog's rehabilitation varies widely, but problems with housebreaking, timidity and poor health are common.
