My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 4/7/12!!!

Harry’s story is a tale that starts horribly and is not easy to read, but it ends with love and with hope.

Seasoned rescue people who see dogs come into rescue from kill shelters, breeders, and animal control officers are accustomed to seeing dogs at their worst - before they have received medical attention and care. Unfortunately, they occasionally see a dog in a condition that is beyond comprehension. Harry is one of those dogs. When our veterinarian first saw him, she broke down in tears.

Harry has a lick granuloma on his entire left front leg - a very painful condition that is usually treatable. But his former owner never sought help for Harry, and by the time Harry came into rescue, nearly everyone thought it was too late for Harry to be saved. The poor fellow was in such pain and was so depressed when he was turned over to Sunshine. He had been owned by a breeder who kept Harry in a confined area most of the 10 years of his life. It is appalling enough that a human being could let a dog linger in this horrid condition -- but it gets worse -- in 2007 Harry had the same condition on his right front leg -- and the owner had his front leg removed!

In spite of all this stacked against him, Harry's life is turning around. In the short time he has been with Sunshine, he is feeling better and is lifting his head, smiling, and wagging his tail. While this resilient boy needs time for his front leg to heal, Harry doesn't seem to mind that he has 3 legs and has adapted well. His attitude is, "Dogs have 3 legs and a spare - I just don't have the spare anymore." His veterinarian and the entire staff are madly in love with him! He is one of those VERY SPECIAL Goldens! Harry is gentle and happy. He adores people and relishes all the affection he is getting. In addition to being extremely handsome, Harry is exceedingly smart!

Harry will need some extra TLC throughout his life. He will probably need to remain on antibiotics for most of his days and he needs some simple eye drops for a dry eye condition. The fur may never fully grow back on his leg, so a covering like some fashionable colored stretchy gauze can be used in cold weather for protection.

Sunshine can help Harry's leg to heal. We can give him attention and nutritious food and the antibiotics to help him heal. The only thing we cannot give Harry is the home he never has known. If you can give this dignified, gentle Golden the love and home he deserves, please apply for Harry. He is set on getting better so that he can meet you!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog - make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
