My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Name: Ruby #2614
Age: 10 months DOB 5/18/2011
Color: Red
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Female/Spayed
Weight: Micro Mini -7 lbs

The phone rang late on a Friday afternoon. Our rep’s heart sank as she listened to the woman on the other end. A backyard breeder that we have been working with to try and get her to spay and neuter all her doxies, was on the other end of the line. She said she had a dog that the vet said needed “24 hr care” and asked if we could help. We called the vet to find out what this meant. We learned that the woman had brought in a 10 month old puppy that was on death’s door. The puppy had a stillborn baby of her own a few days prior and she now had pyometra (infection of the uterus). The owner had no way to pay for the needed surgery and the vet office was closing. We were told in no uncertain terms that the dog had to get to an emergency clinic ASAP.

We knew this was going to be an expensive dog but we couldn’t just let her die. We raced her to our vet, hoping she would still be alive when we got there. She underwent an emergency spay (the cure) and was pumped full of antibiotics. It was touch and go as to whether she would make it through the night. It was with great relief when we called on Sat morning and found that Ruby was on the road to recovery.

Ruby is now fully recovered from her medical ordeal and is now working on her mental issues. Ruby spent her young whole life inside the house among the company of other unsocialized dogs. As a result, she is afraid of everything. However, she is young and we believe she can overcome most of her earlier trauma. She is now in “independent, brave dog” boot camp. This means she sleeps in a crate as she needed to learn she was fine by herself. When she is scared and wants to be picked up, we ignore her (Picking her up when she is scared would just reinforce that she was right to be afraid. We pick her up to cuddle all the time but this is on our terms, not because she is frightened) .Her foster mom is trying to get her out to see new places and new people as much as she can while also caring for all the other dogs in her home.

Ruby is a very sweet and very cuddly dog. She needs an owner that will not baby her which will most likely make her fears worse. (You can still spoil her. For example, Ruby gets to cuddle in bed at night to watch TV with her foster mom but at bedtime she moves to the crate). A confident, fearless canine brother would be great. She should not go to a home with another fearful dog as this will just reinforce Ruby’s fears. She should also not go to a home with very young children as she could easily be injured.

Ruby went on some real walks and is doing very well. She and a dachshund from the foster home went together on a nice walk around the neighborhood. Rudy was great. She did not bark or shriek at anyone. She saw several dogs and people but did not have a problem because of the other confident dachshund. Ruby is getting more comfortable and confident every day.

Because Ruby is so tiny, she’s very portable. If you like to take a dog with you everywhere you go, Ruby is your girl. She steals the heart of everyone she meets. Ruby is of course spayed and current on her vaccinations. For the first time in her life, she is now also flea free.
