My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Barkley is a very young Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) who was picked up as a stray. He had an injury on his rear leg, was emaciated, and utterly terrified of people. The Chief Warden and ACOs at Dinwiddie shelter took special time out for Barkley, to help him begin to trust again - we deeply appreciate the effort they put into him, as well as refusing to put him down, because they KNEW he was a special boy!!

Since coming into GUARD's program, Barkley has shown that he is eager to trust people and is starting to come out of his shell and act like the mischievous, wiggly-butt Corso pup he truly is...compare the photo of him taken with our Intake Director Heidi, versus the recent photo of him with his foster dad - he's relaxed and smiling, yet he'd only been in foster for 3 days when the other photo was taken! He is now neutered and has been vetted - he's HW negative, woo hoo! We will post updates and new pictures as Barkley blossoms and grows into the confident, secure Corso boy we know he can be!

Cane Corsos are outstanding family dogs, but they are a true guardian breed and are NOT for inexperienced owners...in addition to that, Barkley is currently very, very underweight, yet he is 95 lbs and still growing - so like all of GUARD's alumni, he's going to be a whole lotta dog. GUARD will be working closely with Cane Corso Rescue to help place this outstanding young man. Get the jump on the competition and request your app today!!
