About Our Shelter...
The Cat Association of Topeka (C.A.T.) began its operation in the spring of 1988 and since then, has placed thousands of cats and kittens in loving homes. In July of 2003, the organization moved into its current facility. The new shelter features colorful cage-free rooms with lots of cubby-holes, ramps, ledges, ramps, and steps for cats to play or just escape for a much-needed nap. Secure screened in porches provide views of nature and visits from a neighboring squirrels and birds. Our quarantine room has its own air system, providing a safe environment for recovering or ill cats.

Along with C.A.T.'s adoption program, every opportunity is used to educate the public on the need for sterlization and the importance of vaccinations, good nutrition and proper pet care. As we continue to grow we hope to establish a broad-based volunteer coalition, and increase the number of adoptions to caring homes. We are also working towards a coalition of other animal care organizations in our community, and increasing awareness in the community. We have a great many kind and generous supporters who help us. It's a great place to be a cat lover, or a cat!

Our Adoption Process...
Anyone interested in adopting a cat or kitten is asked to fill out an application. This enables us to assist them in selecting a cat or kitten best suited to their wants and lifestyle. It also helps us avoid placing a cat in a situation where it may become stressed or endangered. The shelter will accept the return of any cat (adopted from C.A.T.) for any reason. We do reserve the right to deny adoption. Adoption fees are $60 for males and $65 for females, and senior cats are half price. All cats go home with a 4lb. bag of Science Diet cat food and the new owners get a 10% discount in our Catty Shack Retail shop for 30 days.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Shyla, a Topeka Domestic Shorthair cat was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Domestic Shorthair for sale in Topeka, or seeking a Domestic Shorthair cat from a breeder in Topeka.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Topeka already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Topeka breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Domestic Shorthair breeders who help with Domestic Shorthair rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Topeka paves the way for another one to be saved.
