Gary's Story...
I first meet Gary in May 2006 when I was feeding a feral colony in La Mirada. He was so afraid and confused I knew he did not belong there but he would not come to me. The next night when I went to feed I brought a trap and a large carrier with me, but no sign of Gary. A few days later Gary reappeared and I could see he was having a tuff time living on the street. He did not belong there and I truly believe his former owners, stupid people, had dumped him. I found out later that Gary was an unneutered 9-month-old boy and the locals were defending their territory.
I did not want to traumatize him any more so I tried to get him into a carry that I had tried a string onto the door with and stepped away. There was food in the carrier and I could tell he was hungry yet very afraid. He did not go for it and after I gave it some thought, I realized of course he would not get into a carrier, look what happened to him the last time he got in a carrier, he was thrown out on streets.
The next night I set the trap and waited for hours but he would not take the bait. I did not leave any food to insure he would be hungry the next day. He was hungry enough to put fear aside for food and got in the trap. I took him home and to my vet the next day. I noticed the side of his head was swollen and that he was not neutered. Once he got out of that place and safe in a home he was friendly, it was if a light went off in his head, “I am ok now”.
He had an abbess on his cheek that was growing inward. The vet did surgery when he neutered him. Gary had a drain tube in for quite some time, he healed beautifully, but it caused nerve damage to that side of his face especially his jaw. After that, he was never able to close his mount completely and with age, it has gotten more and more noticeable.
Gary was adopted a few months later and was with her for 4 years. His new mommy was a traveling nurse and her when she was sent to Guam, Gary came back to me. I had him up for a adoption, and he is still posted with a couple of group, but people see him with his mouth open and assumed he was mouth breathing and sick. As he has gotten older it has gotten more noticeable and his tongue now sticks out all the time. I think it is cute!
Gary is a big, gentle love bug that does not ask for anything, other than having his head rubbed. He loves his head rubbed and to curl up on a soft bed.
Please open your heart to this sweet big love bug.
Thank you

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in lake elsinore already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a lake elsinore breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
