My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Abby is a very sociable and friendly young girl. She is an active young dog that would do well as part of a busy family. She would be an excellent second dog as long as the other dog enjoyed playing. Her foster mom has been working on her training but obedience classes would be best to help Abby become a capable and respected companion. She is an intelligent dog that learns quickly and loves to be where the action is. Abby is approximately one to one and half years old and weighs 33 lbs.

Here is what her foster mom had to say about Abby:

Abby is a happy little girl whose tail never stops wagging – it’s even wagged in her sleep! She has integrated into her foster home easily, and gets along well with all the other critters. She has never bothered with the cats, except to give them a good sniff. She eats well, and everything goes in and out nicely.

She has been very friendly with every person she has met, (adult or child) there has been no hesitation in greeting anyone, and she has never jumped up on anyone. The same goes for other dogs she has met on her walks – the only time there has been barking is if Chewy or Jethro has started it. She is a bundle of energy, and will need a good daily walk and/or a FENCED back yard to play in. She loves the dog park and enjoys playing with all the other dogs there. She liked the doggy paddling pool, jumped right in and lay down!

Abby can be a bit of a bull in a china shop, and has walked over Chewy and under Jethro to get to where she was going, and at the park ran slap into the side of a St. Bernard and knocked the wind out of herself. She is hard to catch at the park when it’s time to go home, but has no problem if someone reaches out to hold her collar for me. She should NOT be allowed off leash in an open area. She sleeps at the foot of the bed, and loves to come for a morning cuddle and tummy rub when I wake up.

Abby knows sit and give a paw, drop it and leave it. Come is good in the house. She is learning wait and stay. She is very quiet in the house but active as any young inquisitive dog. She has been crated when I go to work for the day. She barks for a few minutes when I leave but settles down. Yesterday and today I left her out of the crate when I went to work, and there have been no issues. She appears to be fully house trained. She is learning not to dash out of the car when I open the door. She has learned some leash manners over the past two weeks, but can still pull strongly when she wants. I reinforce ‘wait’ and ’stay’ when I leave the house and she’s been good.

Obviously I can’t say what she would be like as an only pet, but I strongly believe she would do best with another dog or where someone is home more often than not as she is very social. A family with an active lifestyle would be great, as she has energy to burn! She learns fairly quickly, and would do well with obedience training, and I can see her doing well in agility or flyball. She’s fast! She will need a good play session every day, and/or a good long walk daily. She’s a lovely girl, and will make an excellent addition for the right family. A fenced back yard is a must.

If you think Abby would be a good choice for your family, please submit an application to http://www.uglymutts.com found under "The Dogs" tab for consideration.
