SAVES(Spay, Alter, Vaccinate every Stray) is a volunteer humane organization with roots firmly establisher on Eastern Long Island.
SAVES was incorporated in 1996 as a 501-c-3 not-for-profit corporation to address the needs of homeless cats and their caretakers.
SAVES promotes Trap-Neuter_Return(TNR) of felinesas well as spaying and neutering of companion animals. TNR is the only effective and humane solution for feral/stray feline overpopulation. TNR is a nonlethal method whereby stray or feral cats are humanely trapped, evaluated, vaccinated and sterilized. Kittens and tame cats are adopted into good homes and the healthy feral cats are returned to the familiar habitats under the lifelong care of dedicated volunteers. TNR has not only prevented the birth of thousands of feral kittens, but has improved the quality of lives of the altered felines. To access more detailed information about TNR visit alleycat.alliesorg. If you are feeding stray or feral unaltered felines, please contact SAVES for help with TNR.
SAVES provides many services including:
Free Feline Neuter/Vaccination Clinics. Trapping, spaying/neutering, vaccination , etc. of feral cats. Financial assistance for spaying/neutering of companion felines for low & moderate - income households. Insulated shelters for cat colonies. Distribution of cat food to cat colony caretakers. Management of Numerous cat colonies. Assistance with the rescue, socialization and adoption of feral kittens.
Humane education and outreach.
Adoptable felines are kept in foster homes and can be seen by contacting SAVES via telephone or email.
Some adoptable felines are available at Petco in Riverhead. Applications can be completed there. Once applications are screened the applicant will be advised if they are approved.
We use an application/ contract process to screen potential applicants. If the applicant is approved for adoption we request a $60 adoption donation.
We ask that the animal will be returned to SAVES and not given away or taken to a shelter if the adopter cannot keep it.
