Update 10/11/12: Quincy has taken a turn for the worse. His immune system was compromised because of his poor condition and has subsequently developed some type of cold. He is on 2 different medications to help clear up his cold - because of this, he has been zapped of all energy and prefers to sit and hang his head so low that he is resting his nose on the floor as he sits. He refused to eat last night, and this morning and showed no interest in eating or drinking. After touching base with the vet, she asked that Quincy be brought in to be seen. Quincy has dropped another 7oz weight, leaving him just under 4 lbs. Fearing dehydration, Qunicy was given fluids and put on high caloric food to try and get him strough enough to fight his cold. After only one syringe full of food, Quincy decided the food tasted pretty good and took over the job of feeding himself! He ate 1/2 a can in one setting!!! Way to go Q!! Our hope is that he will continue to eat and gain strength. Quincy now has a nice warm sweater and has his very own heating pad that we have placed under his bed. He loves to snuggle under blankets and just stick his nose out from under when he sleeps. Thank you all for caring about this deserving little guy. Thank you United Yorkie Rescue for not giving up on him and supporting his desire to experience love. If you can help with his care, he sure deserves it! Thank you.
Initial Bio 10/3/12: Hi, my name is Quincy, and I'm a survivor. I really don't want to talk about my past, it makes me too sad. What I will share is that I now have enough food to eat, a warm bed and the medicine I need to feel better. Thank you United Yorkie Rescue.
Foster mom here: Quincy lived in the South and has only recently arrived in Wisconsin after help from 4 people all the way from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois to Wisconsin. Quincy's past is not a great one. His original photo was one that broke our hearts. The decision was made that he deserved a chance to experience love and life. His nails were curled up over his feet, he had eye infections, ear infections, a tape worm, inflamed intestines, a permanently curved spine, no teeth, very little hair, he was missing at least 1/2 of his lower jaw and was so malnourished that he was all bones and could barely walk. He just layed curled up in a ball - very seldom moving.
We are only a week into his rescue, and Quincy has made HUGE strides! Although we do not know his age, the vet believes he is 12-14 years old, but because of his poor condition, it is hard to tell. Quincy has had x-rays, ultrasounds, blood tests, and other tests to try to determine what can be done for him. It was originally thought that he was blind and deaf as well, but I am happy to say that even though Quincy has suffered from untreated dry eye, he still has some vision in his right eye. He can also hear some now that the infections in his ears are being treated! Quincy is now on a grain free limited ingredient diet and is eating 3 times a day with gusto. At just over 4 lbs, his target weight is closer to 7 - he is sure doing his part to get there! Because he is missing a lot of his lower jaw, eating is hard for him. At first, he frequently got tired eating and stopped before he was full. Together, we found a way that allows him to eat as much as he wants without getting exhausted. He sure does love his food, now he will eat 1/3 of a can for each meal!
Just yesterday, Quincy met me when I came home. He was up and walking around in his area wiggling his little tail. We went outside and he followed me around for about 10 minutes! He shakes some, but that is getting less and less as he is learning that he doesn't have anything to fear anymore and that there is lots of food and several warm laps to snuggle in! The only thing he needs now is a nice warm sweater and a furever home! When I asked the vet if she thought he could be adopted, she said YES!! What Quincy's new furever home would need to know is that he will need a grain free diet and special medicine for dry eye for the rest of his life. He is older, but is very sweet. If you have room in your heart for a senior citizen who needs and deserves some TLC, Quincy is the man for you!
