My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 12/1/12!!!

Sniff, sniff, sniff….. My name is Mandy, and I am a purebred, gorgeous, red Bloodhound. “What am I doing on a Golden Retriever Rescue site,” you ask? Well, I was sniffing around and I found this website about Golden Retriever dogs who are as gentle and good-natured as me. So I thought I'd stick around, hoping to find a forever home.

The rescue people at SGRR said they will help me. I have been waiting since August at a Southern shelter for a Bloodhound rescue to accept me. But those Bloodhound rescues were all too crowded. The southern shelter was also very crowded and it was my turn to be "put to sleep" (I don't believe it was really “sleep”). A nice lady at that kill shelter said I was too dignified and gentle for that to happen, so she asked SGRR to help me and they said YES!!

I am 3 to 4 years old and I'm a nice low-energy girl. I love other dogs and I love people. I'm very good on a leash and enjoy taking walks. Perfect, right? I am also spayed and heartworm negative. I am fully housetrained and ready to live in a home again where I can be someone's special dog. I do need a fenced yard so my superior nose doesn't get me into trouble.... that could be how I landed in doggy jail in the first place!

I don't mean to brag, but this is what I found written about my breed:

"The Bloodhound is a kind, patient, noble, mild-mannered and lovable dog. Gentle, affectionate and excellent with children, this is truly a good natured companion. These dogs are so good-natured that they will lie there and meekly let children clamber all over them.

The new owner of a Bloodhound will need to have patience and possess great tact for consistent leadership for training to succeed. Clear rules need to be set and followed. They are naturally gentle animals but they are not easy to obedience train. A Bloodhound becomes devoted to its master and gets along well with people. This dog loves everyone and some will greet wanted and unwanted visitors happily. They can be protective of their domain if no one is home, but out on a trail, they will welcome anyone. Some will bark and let you know when strangers are around. They can live in harmony with other dogs and household pets. Bloodhounds are able to follow any scent, even human — a rare ability in a dog. Bloodhounds can never be kept in an unfenced yard. There is a good chance instinct will lead them to wander off if they are off leash. They flee when they get on a scent; instinct drives them to find the end of the trail.

Bloodhounds are generally very affectionate, but independent hounds. They want their share of attention, but do not require it constantly. They need human attention on a very regular basis to keep the independence in their nature from creating social problems. Bloodhounds are NOT good outside dogs. They need their quality ‘human time’ each and every day. This helps to keep the dogs' temperaments sound and healthy."

Do you think I might fit into your home? Please consider me -- I really would be so happy to be part of a loving home.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
