My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but I'm sure I'll love you, so call me maybe! My name is Barkley, and I love people! I wiggle my butt in joy when I meet you, and if you pet me, I'm your best friend (and if you give me a treat, even better)! If you are looking for a devoted companion who wants nothing more than to be close to you, I'm your boy. I'm a charmer! It was hard for my foster mom to get a picture of me because I kept coming toward her for petting :)

AGE: 9-10 years

SIZE: ~ 30 lbs, and on a diet! Barkley's adopter will need to measure his food, feed at scheduled times, limit treats, and provide gentle exercise to help him get to a healthy weight.

TEMPERAMENT: Barkley is very loving and affectionate and craves attention and petting. He loves men and women, and is eager to please. He wants to be close to you as much as possible, and would love a home where his people can spend lots of time with him. He wiggles and hops for attention!

FENCE: Barkley goes potty on-leash at his foster home and we will consider a home without a fence if the adopter will commit to always having Barkley on a leash when outside, for his lifetime (as required in our adoption contract). All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).

DOGS: Barkley is respectful of the other dogs in his foster home. Because he craves attention and affection, he would be happiest in a home where he can be the one & only, or with one other easy-going dog who doesn't mind sharing attention.

CATS: Barkley is fine with the dog-savvy cat in his foster home.

KIDS: Barkley likes the older children in his foster home. He can be a bit grabby and protective with food and treats (possibly due to some minor age-related vision loss), so a home with dog-savvy older children or no children is best. He may grab food from hands of young children.

CRATE-TRAINED: Yes.

HOUSE-TRAINED: Barkley is reliably house-trained and signals when he needs to go outside to potty.

OBEDIENCE TRAINING: Barkley has not had any formal training. His foster home is working on some basic commands, and taking food and treats gently.

LEASH MANNERS: Barkley walks very nicely on a leash and does not pull.

CAR RIDES: Barkley rides great in a crate in the car.

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Fairly low. Barkley does some pacing, likely due to his past living conditions, but otherwise is content to just hang out with you.

BARKING: Don't be misled by his name! Barkley is really pretty quiet for a Sheltie, and only barks when he wants you keep petting him (he stops quickly when told).

HEALTH ISSUES: Barkley is being evaluated for some age-related stiffness. His vision may not be as clear as it once was (again age-related) and we are evaluating that as well.

EXPERIENCED HOME: Not required. Barkley simply wants a home where he will receive lots of love and affection.

Barkley is ever so sweet and he will put a smile on your face. His exuberance when you talk to him and pet him will make you feel like the most special person in the world! He would be a great companion for a retired person, or someone with a low-key lifestyle who enjoys spending time with their Sheltie friend.

Please read our adoption guidelines at http://www.mnsheltierescue.org/howtoadopt prior to calling or emailing us, as this may answer your questions.

***The Sheltie's bio explains the type of home that will best meet that Sheltie's needs, and indicates if a fence is required, and whether the Sheltie can be placed with children, dogs or cats. Please note that we cannot guarantee the availability of the Shelties in our program, and that our priority is to meet the needs of the Shelties in our care.***

Barkley's adoption fee is $150.00, and he is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested, treated for heartworm disease and on heartworm preventative, had a dental with extractions, is microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc.
