My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Blitz has the perfect personality. He is gentle with everyone, fits in extremely well with all other dogs, will lie quietly for a snooze or an affectionate cuddle but is always happy to get up to go out for a walk. He is a wonderful little companion that weighs just 11 lbs. He is a young boy approximately 2 years old.

Here is what else his foster mom had to say:

Blitz is all black and his legs are longer than those of a miniature Dachshund. He is totally sociable with everyone he meets. We don't come into contact with children, except those he sees at the leash free forest and he behaves well with everyone. Blitz does not have an aggressive bone in his little body. He is extremely gentle and loving.

This little fellow is lively and curious. He is always happy to meet new people. Blitz is a total joy to have around other dogs. He is not interested in being dominant and therefore fits right in with the group. Because he is a Dachshund mix and loves to chase furry creatures, I would not recommend him living with cats. My experience with Dachshunds is that they have quite a strong prey instinct.

He doesn't seem bothered by traffic or loud noises; he takes everything in his stride. Blitz loves to race around outside off his leash, investigating things in the long grass and he also loves to go for walks. Blitz's energy level is moderate. He is happy to snooze for long periods but is always up for a car ride and a walk. Blitz doesn't shed. His skin is a little dry and flaky so I have started to add a little oil to his diet. Blitz is quiet in the house. When he first came he barked when he was in his crate because he didn't want to be alone. I rarely hear him bark now.

Blitz will sit for a treat and he will come. He is so small and naturally well behaved that I haven't found it necessary to train him beyond what he already knows. He happily goes outside to do his business. He doesn't "ask" to go out but will follow the other dogs outside when it's time to go outside. He is quite content to go into his crate. Of course he'd much rather be with his people but he doesn't complain. Blitz walks beautifully on the leash. He doesn't try to steal food and he has never chewed anything. Although he can jump up onto your lap for a cuddle, he never attempts to jump up onto counters. Blitz loves to jump into the truck and go for a ride. He looks out of the window to see what's going on. Sometimes he tends to wander around while you are driving so it is best to harness him to the seat belt or he'd end up on your lap.

Blitz shows no interest in running away. He bonds easily to his people. Outside in a leash free environment curiosity often gets the better of him and he loves to investigate things. However, he never strays far and when he's finished and he can't see you straight away he does get very worried.

Because he runs very fast and is so small (about 11 lbs) it would be a good idea to fasten a bell onto his collar if you take him to an off leash forest or into a field to run as he does panic if he can't locate you straight away. My teenage daughter takes him to bed with her and he sleeps very quietly on her bed all night. Because he is small, he does feel the cold and seems to enjoy wearing a jacket. Like most Dachshunds, he loves to burrow under blankets.

Blitz settles well into a routine. He needs company, either human company or other dogs for companions. He seems to feel secure with his "pack" around him. He is a delightful little chap, extremely well behaved and will give much joy as a loyal companion.
