From Vegas’s foster Dad: Vegas is the most loveable knucklehead I’ve ever been around!! An 85lb Shar Pei/Bull Mastiff mix, around 2 ½ years old, Vegas needs a patient, strong-willed owner who understands his hard headed ways. Vegas is a dominant male with a lot of ‘Mochismo!’ He walks with his head high & shoulders back and everyone he comes across knows…Vegas is The Man!
Once you get to know him, he is really just a big teddy bear, who loves to cuddle and looks for your approval & satisfaction in everything he does. Vegas is full of energy and would do best with an active family or even with a ‘job’ of his own…whether that’s protecting a property (would do best on a large property with a big perimeter to patrol) or ‘managing’ a shop or warehouse all day. Vegas is a great companion dog!!
He was rescued at the last minute from Death Row in a Houston shelter TWICE, bounced around between temporary fosters & boarding until a spot opened up with his current foster, in November 2011, where he received the daily training he needed. After a LOT of physical & emotional rehab, clearing up his medical issues and ongoing training, Vegas is more than ready to go to a forever home of his own. He’s a dog that will bond with you deeply and never leave your side. He gets along great with people but will need to be monitored around other dominant male dogs and very submissive or insecure females. He loves to play rough with other dogs (wrestle at a high level) so larger dogs would be ideal. He needs more stimulation (human & dog interactions, walks, play time, personal attention, etc) that his foster can currently provide.

We rescue in a low income area of Houston called the 5th Ward. We founded Forgotten Dogs of the 5th Ward Project about a year ago to address what we saw as an obvious need to help the many stray dogs we were seeing in there. We set up feeding stations and network and pull as many as we can when a foster home or no-kill rescue group says they can take them in. One of our goals is education and we provide residents with vouchers that cover the complete cost of having their animals altered and vaccinated against rabies. In addition, we provide other vaccinations and worming in the field free of charge. Since November 2011 we have grown in size and have rescued over 250 dogs and a few cats from the area. We are launching a program called Habitat for Hounds through which we will donate doghouses and blankets to residents for their dogs that are kept outside. Our adoption fee ranges from $100 to $150. We have an online application and a contract and all dogs/puppies are either spayed/neutered prior to adoption if old enough or arrangements are made to have them spayed/neutered afterwards.
