My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Read more about me here.

When Luke first came to MWCR his future wasn't very bright. He was a stray who had somehow found his way to an Iowa shelter and from there to his foster home. His vet had diagnosed him with fibrosarcoma and said that Luke only had a few months to live. But Luke wasn't listening. He was far too happy at his foster home to think about making a trip across the rainbow bridge. He was enjoying life, enjoying his family and enjoying the love of people. And now, almost two years after the tumor was removed from his mouth with no recurrence, Luke is looking for a home of his very own.

Luke is a gentle, easy going guy who has been a delightful house guest at his foster home. He is fully house trained, and though he is also crate trained, he is so well behaved that he is given the run of the house when his family goes out. He doesn't chew inappropriately or counter surf, but likes to nibble on paper products such as tissues or paper napkins if they are left lying about. He knows several commands such as “come,” “sit,” “stay,” “wait,” “out” and “down.” He walks nicely on his leash and rarely barks.

Luke does not like grooming and particularly dislikes having his feet touched. He has made some progress with this, but should still be muzzled for brushing and nail clipping. When he initially came to his foster home he had one or two instances of snapping in stressful situations, and though there has been no recurrence of this in more than a year, he should probably live in an adult household.

Luke loves everyone he meets. He would much rather be indoors, hanging out with his people, than outside exploring. He is polite and friendly with strangers, never jumping up but sometimes pawing them gently for attention. He gets along well with other dogs and over the last few months at his foster home, he has learned to play gently with both canines and humans. When he first arrived, he had no idea what toys were for or how to play with the resident dogs. He is curious and wary around cats, but might over react if they were to startle him, so he would probably be happiest in a kitty-free home.

Luke is a gentle, low key dog who likes to be near his humans, sleep late in the mornings and go for short, leisurely walks. He loves cars, and not only does he like to go for rides, he enjoys just sitting in a stationary vehicle. One day when his foster mom couldn't find him, she finally located him sitting happily in the passenger seat of their minivan.

Luke is looking for a forever home where he can kick back and enjoy life, whether it is in front of the TV or looking at the view through the window of the family car. We don't know what the future will bring regarding his health, but since the removal of his mouth tumor, he has had almost two happy, healthy years and he shows no sign of change. All he needs now is his very own family to love him and believe in him.
