Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Great Rescue Story! Imagine, you travel to Troy, NC to figure out how to spay/neuter over 27 of a hoarder’s dogs. He lives in the country in a trailer and has no money to do anything for these dogs but feed them so there are moms with puppies everywhere and really just total chaos. You are speaking with the man and a dog comes hobbling towards you, covered with untreated wounds from a savage coyote attack over a week ago. His eyes are pleading, his wounds filled with maggots, a sweet boy just hours from death. What would you do?
Well, we convinced the man to surrender Smokey and took him immediately to the emergency vet. Smokey’s wounds were all infected, his blood infected and the vet said it was the worst case he had ever seen that survived. $2000 later, after extensive cleaning of wounds, multiple stitches, life support, IV hetastarch transfusions (poor man’s plasma) for sepsis, tubes to allow infection to drain, antibiotics, many hours of wound care and dressing changes by loving volunteers and staff, and a toe amputation, Smokey is our latest wonder child, a young boy who is soooo happy to be with us, to be alive, to be finding himself at the beginning of the best life he has ever experienced.
As he lay for weeks on the soft bed in the air conditioning (oh, does he love the air conditioning!!), gentle Smokey learned that he was valuable and loved, two things he had never known before in his short life. He is so happy, healthy and having so much fun! This affectionate and loving boy has come such a long way and is ready to start taking applications for his forever family, a family who will love and cherish him and protect him from awful things like packs of coyotes!!
It is amazing how gentle and appreciative Smokey is. He is a little shy from living with a hoarder who had way too many dogs to socialize them, but he loves gentle affection and will tenderly place his head in your hands or lap to let you know that he is so very thankful for everything that his new people have done for him. He is doing so well here, learning lots of good social skills.
Smokey is going to be a wonderful family pet, and is gaining the confidence that he will always be loved and cared for. He is enjoying walks on the leash now and is well behaved. Adoption donation $100.
