My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please give a big hello to Huckleberry!

You’re not going to believe what happened to Huckleberry the gorgeous, 5 year old Boxer-Bulldog mix we just saved. It actually pains us to tell his story. We keep asking ourselves how someone could have done this to him. Huckleberry was once part of a family in Big Bear, California. He loved to watch the snow gently cover the cold, hard ground from his comfortable ledge on the soft, warm couch. One night his world was turned upside down. His family threw him outside and moved away. That’s right, they left him in the backyard with no food, water or shelter. Huckleberry stared at the snow and began to shiver. As the days passed, his body started to shut down (his stomach and paws turned black with the onset of severe frostbite). He cried for his family and hoped they were happy and safe. He doesn’t remember the Good Samaritan who found him and rushed him to the shelter. He was unconscious when he arrived and it took a few weeks for him to feel half-way normal again. He still missed his family and wondered if it was better to die outside his home, or in this lonely, grey shelter.

He heard Take Me Home was coming for him, but he didn’t believe it. When he finally met our volunteer who wrapped him in her arms, he smiled. He was ready to live again! He still needs a lot of medical attention – his paws have holes in them from the frostbite, his skin is raw, his organs weak, and it’s hard for him to walk – but he gave her soft kisses and let her carry him to her car and take him far away from his old life.

Huckleberry is now resting comfortably in our volunteer’s wonderful home. He’s turned his spot on the couch, for a spot on a plush dog bed in front of the warm fire. He loves watching the fire crackle and pop and the warmth feels so good against his thin fur. Huckleberry is friendly and calm. He likes the companionship of his foster canine siblings. He wants to be part of a family so badly. One thing is for certain: We will help find Huckleberry a new family, and he will never be abandoned again. It’s our promise to him and to all of the animals we save.
