My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sometimes love means letting go. When Laddie injured his leg, his family could not afford the extended care and knee surgery that was needed to make him healthy. They made the hard decision to surrender him to MWCR where they knew he would get the necessary medical care and find a good home. On November 21st, Laddie had surgery to repair his knee and has been recuperating in his foster home. He has recovered quickly and fully like the brave boy that he is, and the only residual problem is a little stiffness when he first stands up. In all respects, he is a happy, healthy collie who can run, climb stairs or hop up into a car with no trouble.

Laddie has been an excellent house guest at his foster home, where he gets along well with the other dogs. He is a submissive boy, so there have been no dominance issues with the resident dogs. He is also good with cats and was very friendly and gentle when he met the 7 year old daughter of a friend. He doesn't jump up on people, but he does like to lie on them, so he might be too much of a lap-full for toddlers. Also, when he gets excited during play, he can be a little mouthy, so his foster mom is working with him on this and his forever home will need to continue his lessons.

Laddie is fully house trained and will stand by the door to signal that he wants to go outside. He can be left alone for up to 10 hours without incident, so there is no need to crate him. He knows the basic commands of “sit,” “down,” and “come” and he is working on “stay” and “off.” He walks nicely on his leash and loves to go for car rides, willingly jumping in and out of the car. Although Laddie doesn't particularly enjoy grooming, he does tolerate it. Like so many collies, Laddie is quite vocal, barking while playing outdoors and sometimes barking when he is left alone inside. For this reason, he probably wouldn't do well in a condo or apartment.

Laddie is a very loving, cuddly boy who likes nothing better than to curl up with his people (and sometimes on his people) and enjoy a quiet evening at home. Although he can be playful and enjoy a good game of chase with the other dogs, he is not a high energy dog and generally prefers snuggling to rough housing. He does like the outdoors though, and isn't afraid to brave the cold and snow of an Upper Midwest winter.

Laddie is quite adaptable and could live as an only dog or with other dogs or cats. He is gentle with children, but they would need to be old enough to understand his occasional “nipping” during high activity play. He is a sweet, loving, low maintenance, collie who is grateful that his original family loved him enough to let him go where he could get healthy and begin a new life with a new forever family.
