My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Katie is a very special dog with an amazing story. This sweet survived living in the woods in a nearby town alluding capture for almost a year that we know of! Several compassionate Good Sameritans fed her and her "packmates" (a chihuahua mix who was finally trapped and adopted by a fellow rescuer, and a shepherd mix who has not yet been apprehended) and looked out for them but they always kept their distance. Finally, she was caught by animal control in a humane trap and taken to the shelter. As terrified as she was there, she never showed an ounce of aggression although she still tried to stay out of reach and acted feral. The nice staff there worked with her and kept her safe for 2 months until we heard she was there and knew right away she would be a perfect Second Chance dog. She had obviously never been on a leash and was terrified being removed from her "safe spot" in her kennel after all that time, but again never tried to bite and we could see she wanted to learn to trust. We thought it would be quite a project for a dog that hadn't been touched by humans in at least a year to learn to live in a household- but boy did she surprise us all! Within an hour of arriving at her foster home she warmed up and was seeking out attention and even hugs! Once she saw the other friendly dogs in the home, she immediately accepted them all as her new pack and turned into a cuddly playful puppy. She sleeps right next to her foster mom and can't get close enough, as if she's trying to make up for a whole year of loneliness. She's very comfortable in the house and obviously must have lived in a home at some point before she was turned loose to fend for herself. She is still learning to walk on a leash and trust "outsiders" and will need a calmer patient adult household willing to socialize her slowly. She LOVES all other dogs and needs a home with at least one other friendly dog to help her feel more confident. She is about 50 pounds full grown with gorgeous yellow wolf-like eyes and soft yellow-lab-colored fur. Please submit an application if you can give this amazing dog the safe permanent home she deserves after all she has been through.

We do not have a shelter- all our pets are in foster homes and can be seen by appointment only during the week, or at our weekly pet adoptions every Sunday at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains from 12:30 to 3PM at 3009 Route 10 East next to 5 Star Car Wash (formerly Boulder Car Wash) in Morris Plains (Denville on GPS). To help us better match a pet to your household, we request you fill out an application on our homepage www.secondchance.petfinder.com and copy and paste it into an email, or print it and bring it to our adoption day when you come. Local inquiries only please- we do not do long distance adoptions.
