My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

2/2/14 - I'VE BEEN ADOPTED!

Adoption Fee: $450

Fostered in Louisiana

Age: 2.5 years

Weight: 7 lbs.

10/24/13 - Maxwell wanted to give everyone an update on his life since being mauled and brought to jail.

He loves to play with other dogs and really needs a playmate. He is truly fond of toys as well. He is fine around cats and larger dogs too, but probably shouldn’t be adopted to a home with a very active large dog due to his surgery and previous issues. He is very affectionate and would love to be in a home that loves to give kisses and attention. He is a little more timid around men than women, but he warms up in sufficient time if the man isn’t overbearing. (Just like some women, lol).

He does well on a leash and loves to go for walks, but this will not be a substitute for a fenced in yard since he loves to run around in the yard. He is very fast and would need a secure fenced yard as well as someone who doesn’t freely open the front door thinking that he wouldn’t dart out.

Maxwell is still in his puppy stage, so does love to seek out socks and underclothes. He says he is just helping with the laundry, but his foster mom knows better.

He is a very easy going guy and is not toy or food aggressive at all. Just all around great personality.

Potty training is taking a little while, but his foster mom is now using belly bands (diapers for male dogs), to aide him in learning. It was a little difficult to use these before because of his broken body and surgery.

Well now he is good to go and ready to meet his new family and fursibling(s). Maxwell had a very rough start, but is a positive little guy that does not let anything keep him or his spirits down. He’s better than prozac to have around. Need a little positive attitude in your life, fill out an application for Maxwell. Cheapest treatment you’ll find.

5/15/13 - Maxwell went for his recheck today and x-rays were taken. He is healing nicely and has been released by Dr. Mauterer and Sherwood South Veterinary Specialists. They have cleared him to move forward with the rest of his vetting, so his foster mom will set his appointments for his neuter, dental cleaning and microchip soon.

Maxwell loves all of you for what you did to save him.

4/17/13 - Maxwell got his stitches out this past Monday and he is doing really well.

Even though Maxwell's strict crate rest makes it a little hard for his foster mom to tell his personality, she has noticed that he is VERY sensitive to loud noises, raised voices, etc. He seems to be more sure of women than men, but isn’t afraid of them, probably just their voice is deeper. He goes back in in two weeks for his check up and to see if he can be downgraded from “strict” crate rest to “moderate” crate rest. Lol

Maxwell’s eyes tell it, but if he could speak, he would personally thank all who donated to is care. This is one baby that was meant to get a second chance and that he has. He is such a grateful, sweet little guy and whomever he chooses for his next owner(s) will definitely not be disappointed.

4/9/13 - Maxwell continues to do well. He is a sweetheart and loves to be held and loved on. His pain is well controlled with the two medicines he is on and he is getting lots of love, rest and good food. He seems to love being in a home and getting special attention now since the memories of being a stray and getting hurt are behind him.

Even though he can't do much right now, his foster mom can see a little of his personality trying to come out and thinks he will be a little sassy sweetheart, just as all yorkies should be.

4/4/13 - Maxwell is doing well after his surgery and will be released tomorrow to his foster home for one month of crate rest. Then he will return to B.R. Veterinary Specialists for more x-rays to see how he is healing from his surgery and also to check on his pelvis fractures at that time. We want to thank everyone who has donated to his vet bill so far. It is so great when people pull together for to save one of these babies. We don’t know what Maxwell’s life was previously, but we do know that YHR will make sure that he is given the veterinary care he needs and then find this special little guy the best home out there for him.

Even though it will be a while before he is ready to go, if you would like to put in an application, we will be accepting them. Any that seem that they might fit what this prince is looking for, we will move forward with paperwork, but Maxwell will stay with YHR until totally vetted and healed.

4/1/13 - Maxwell was at the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter picked up as a stray. This Urgent email went out on 3/28/13:

Maxwell is a young Yorkie with a possible broken or fractured pelvis. He was so matted that he had to be shaved down. The shelter does not have an x-ray machine, so they are asking for a rescue group to take Maxwell to get him the care he needs. This little angel can bear weight on his back legs, but it is painful so he prefers to sit. Dr. Jeff reports that it appears he was attacked from behind. Contact the shelter if you can help. Please SHARE!

Yorkie Haven Rescue received the email on 3/28/13 by one of its foster homes offering to foster this baby. So we headed to N.O. first thing Saturday morning, picked up Maxwell and got him to a 12:00 appointment at Sherwood South Veterinary Hospital to see exactly what needed to be done.

The results of the appointment and x-rays at this point are that Maxwell has multiple issues, including, but probably not limited to:

Flail chest where a segment of the rib cage has collapsed due to multiple fractured ribs on the right side.

His right pelvis is luxated out of its socket.

His left pelvis has a fractured pubis and ishium. Possible fracture of the wing of the ilium from the sacrum.

They kept him over the weekend and stabalized him so that Dr. Stephens could refer with Dr. Mauterer, the orthopaedic surgeon at Sherwood South’s Baton Rouge Veterinary Specialists to access his situation further and do additional testing to see if there may possible be some nerve damage.

I am waiting on a phone call today to get a better idea of what all will need to be done for this poor baby and the estimate for same.
