My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Born in Puerto Rico on March 22, this puppy arrived in New Jersey in late May. His prospects had he stayed in PR would have been grim - most chows end up chained to a bush, with no shelter and limited human contact. Donut is very affectionate, is full of joy when anyone he knows comes around, and loves to be held and cuddled. It was apparent within 24 hours of his arrival that he had some sort of neurologic issue. His foster family in PR thought that perhaps he had been bitten by a poisonous insect. He has been examined by a Veterinary Neurologist in Pennsylvania, who believes that little Donut suffers from a congenital defect. He has delayed sensation to his extremities, which means that when he wants to get up from lying down, he has to really, really think about it to make it happen. He can climb up stairs, but is liable to take a tumble when climbing down stairs. The neurologist suggests that the best therapy is lots and lots of walking (not running), and believes that he could improve with time. The good news is, he will probably never jump on the sofa! Please consider this fellow if you live in a house with minimal steps, love the Chow/Akita type breeds, and are a walker. If you are a therapist, or looking for a therapy dog, he could be a great match.
