Gus's Story...
Say hello to handsome Gus! This big boy is about 1 year old and appears to be a purebred Labrador retriever. He came into a high kill shelter in Louisiana as a stray. No owner came to claim him and Gus was scheduled for euthanasia on his 8th day at the poundthankfully he was rescued instead by Bonnie Blue Rescue friend PAWS of NE LA and is now looking for a forever home up north. Gus has adjusted well to foster care. His foster mom reports that, Gus is a doll who plays well with the other dogs, is completely housetrained, knows sit and comes when called. He is a Lab lovers dream and will fetch anything. He is smart and attentive too. Gus is curious and has jumped/climbed his foster moms chain link fence to go visit her donkey. He was not at all aggressive with Miss Kitty the unimpressed donkey and came right back when he was called. He will likely do best with an invisible fence or wooden privacy fence though in his forever home. We think that Gus may be been being trained as a duck dog by a not so kind handler (very common in Louisiana, the Sportsmans Paradise, unfortunately. He is obedient but seems to have been forced to behave in the past and is head shy and scared of sudden movements at times. His foster mom is working with him on this and has seen great progress so far! She says that Gus loves to petted and gives lots of love in return. Overall, he is a happy, smart young Lab who is ready for a forever family to continue to reinforce that people are kind and good. He would do well in an active, loving family who is ready to add lots of Labrador love to their life. Gus is neutered, microchipped, current on vaccinations, heartworm negative and current on prevention. Dont miss out on this smart, handsome fella! Check out Gus in action before he was rescued from the shelter: . Please email us at if you are interested in fostering or adopting Gus! Our adoption fee is $300. $75 of the adoption fee is refundable if proof of completion of obedience class is demonstrated within 3 months of adoption. Each of our pups goes to their forever family up to date on vaccines, spayed/neutered, microchipped, current on flea/tick/heartworm preventative.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Gus, a Richmond Labrador Retriever dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Labrador Retriever for sale in Richmond, or seeking a Labrador Retriever dog from a breeder in Richmond.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Richmond already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Richmond breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Labrador Retriever breeders who help with Labrador Retriever rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Richmond paves the way for another one to be saved.
