My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We rescued Nico from a friend that found her in a parking lot in Corpus Christi. She was collared without identification or a chip. She looked like she had been taken care of and seemed like a family-dog. After trying to find her owners for several weeks, our friend had to find her a home due to restrictions at her apartment so we brought her home in November 2010 to join a senior GSD and a Lab. She immediately went into heat and we had her spayed.

Quick Stats
* Age: Approximately 3
* Gender: Female
* Mix/Purebred: Unknown. She looks like a purebred. She’s 65#, mainly black, with some tan on belly
* Housetrained: yes
* Crate trained: never been in a crate
* Heartworm Negative/Positive: no heartworms
* Spayed/Neutered: yes
* Micro chipped: yes
* Good with other dogs: She is good with my 2 males and likes to play, but she has been challenging my older female for dominance and they are fighting.
* Good with cats: We have an indoor cat and they are good with each other but she will chase cats if she comes across one.
* Good with children: Excellent with children.

Her behavior made it clear that she had been around children and was excellent with my baby. He loved to crawl on her and would play with her a lot. My son is now 3, and she is still good with him. We also adopted a Great Pyrenees and they are good friends and play a lot. We have a “dog room” in our home and a fenced in back yard. The dogs come in and out as they please and Nico will go to the door if she wants to go outside. She likes to run but does best with a gentle leader. She will follow common commands but is stubborn and strong-willed.

She will bark aggressively at other dogs but will just play if given the chance. She plays well with other dogs at the dog park and gets along with both of my males and our new kitty. However, after about a year she started challenging my older female. We were out of town for the first fight and our house-sitter had to break it up. The next time they got into a fight, we were home, and it started with Nico challenging my older female for dominance. They got into 2 other fights when we were out of town and then another one last night.

I do not feel that I can risk having any more dog fights with a toddler in the house. Nico is a dominant dog and I think she needs to be in another home where she doesn’t feel she has to challenge for dominance. She would be great with a family but needs to be the “top dog”.
