My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Name: Galileo

Sex: Male

Breed: Shih Tzu

Age: 5-8 years old

Level of blindness: Not completely blind.

Cause of eye issues: Left eye has a dense cataract, and no pupil response. That eye could also have been injured in the past. His right eye has heavy pigmentation and also a cataract, but does have pupil response.

Health issues: Galileo is a pretty healthy boy! His heart and lungs are fine. It is unknown whether his eyes will remain stable or get worse in the future, but he has adjusted very well. Gally’s teeth aren't in the best of shape and he will need a dental in the not too distant future. He has a broken tooth that is not painful, but it will have to come out during his dental. Other than that, all looks to be within normal limits!

Weight: 15 pounds

Good with dogs: Yes

Good with cats: Yes

Good with kids: Unknown at the moment

Currently being fostered in: NY

*BDRA will transport the dog a reasonable distance, to an approved adopter, at no extra cost, even if out of state.

Information:

6/03/13: Galileo is the G Dog in BDRA's Astronomy Theme Name Game, and he was named after the Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. With a name like that to live up to, Galileo has to be a special pup, and he most certainly is!

Galileo is a shih tzu with beautiful coloring! He was found in a parking lot in Georgia. Animal Control took him to the local shelter, and nobody claimed him. After three weeks in a temporary foster home, he made the two day trip to New York. And he charmed all of the drivers he met along the way!

Galileo is a very sweet, loving and happy little boy. He loves to be held and carried around, and one of his favorite things to do is sleep on a lap. He follows me around from room to room, sometimes going up on his hind legs to be picked up. He has never met a stranger, and will roll right over for a belly rub!

Gally also loves to eat and takes treats very gently from my hand. Squeaky toys are also a favorite of his, and he throws them around, pounces on them and plays tug of war! He’s not as good at dropping the squeaky toy when asked, and we are working on that.

He is not completely blind, but seems to be able see shadows and he may have some peripheral vision. He's done only a little bumping here, and was able to find the water right away. He does bump sometimes, though, especially if it's darker. He sometimes hesitates on walks and I have to encourage him to move forward.

Gally’s hearing is not quite perfect and while he is far from deaf, I have to raise my voice a little so he can hear me. And he can certainly hear the clink of the bowls when it's meal time!

Galileo was housebroken at his temporary foster home, but has needed some adjustment time here. In the first week or so, he did have accidents in the house, and he wears a belly band when I’m at work. For the past several days he has kept his belly band dry, and has even barked to be let outside! He also sleeps quietly through the night.

Galileo has a very special talent. He is an acrobat! He does not like the crate and had been staying in an exercise pen. One day I came home from work and he was sleeping in my bed! He had climbed out of the expen and jumped right onto the bed!

If you would like to have sweet Galileo become a loving member of your family, please fill out an adoption application. He would love to have his very own forever home.
