My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Azabache (“Bache”) is a jet black 5 year old ( dob 04/30/2008) male Dane with cropped flip-flop ears like the Dane in our MAGDRL logo. Weighing in at 145 lbs., he is a big, stunningly handsome boy who has a lovely, shiny coat and solid black color except for tiny white areas under the heel of each foot. Bache came to MAGDRL when his owner had to leave the country and could not take him along. Upon coming to us, he was simply terrified and panicked by being alone with strangers and in strange places. Getting him out of the transport vehicle was feat of patience and not for the fainthearted. He was snappy, grumbly and growly, and for the first few days but his foster left him alone baby-gated in a room, fed/watered him, and let him out into her fenced yard. Despite his stress during this time, Bache never soiled the house or destroyed anything. Within two weeks his stress diminished and he let the foster touch him without complaint. Gradually he began to trust her and within a month, he was her shadow, cuddly and affectionate, snuggling with her in typical Velcro Dane fashion. However, Bache is a ‘talker’ and due to his size, he has a big, loud bark that can be intimidating. His foster is working with him to manage his barking, but it’s a work in progress. Bache knows basic obedience commands, walks well on leash, does not need to be crated and is a good boy at home alone. Bache had been an only dog who lived in the city and walked on-leash all his life. Although he came to MAGDRL fully vetted and in good health, he had a stiff gait and a ‘bunny-hop’ run instead of the typical Dane stride. Thankfully this was due to lack of exercise which had caused his leg muscles to atrophy, but this worked itself out with room to run at his foster’s fenced yard. However his foster also noticed white specs on both eyes, so he was put on medical hold until this issue was diagnosed and resolved. The specialist found “precipitates” in both eyes which if left untreated will cause blindness. Bache was referred to a veterinary eye specialist who recommended an initial round of eye drops in an effort to avoid eye surgery. Fortunately Bache takes his twice-daily drops without complaint and after two months, the drops have reduced the precipitates. The good news is that for now, it does not appear that he will need surgery but to preserve his vision, he will require twice daily eye drops for the rest of his life. Since Bache is no longer on medical hold, he is ready for his forever home. He is a big boy with a big voice that can be intimidating, so he will not be placed in a home with small children or in a busy household with frequent visitors. He meets other dogs OK but has not done well living with the foster’s female Dane. It is unclear whether the issue is with that particular dog, but the optimum home for him would be as an only dog. Cats are unknown. Bache can be intimidating and will need a Dane-savvy owner who will be patient with him as he adjusts to his new people and surroundings. However, once he knows he’s home, he is a real looker and a sweetheart who is destined to be his adoptive family’s ‘heart dog.’
