My name is Dexter and I am looking for someone to love me!
My foster mom says that she is in love with me, but I would really like to be the man of the house and, well, there are already several of those here so here I am, in search of that “perfect” place to call home.
I am a small, handsome fellow with a short, sleek coat. My tummy and legs are white and freckly while my back is tan coloured. My tail is mostly tan and has a little white tip. My wee face is uniquely marked with a black mask like feature that makes me very interesting…and cute!
I love basking in the sunshine on my foster families’ deck poolside, or lounging on the furniture like the cats. I love climbing right up to the back of the couch and being flakey. Sometimes my foster family tells me to get down and mind my manners, but I like to sneak back to my favourite spot when no one is looking. I like to help my foster mom dig in the garden, but she tells me that this isn’t such a good idea so I am trying to resist the temptation.
I am a really loyal companion, and I am ALWAYS right on my foster mom’s heels. I especially like it when she picks me up and carries me under her arm. I always give her lots of sweet kisses on her cheeks to show my appreciation. Sometimes, she will let me curl up beside her and she will rub my tummy and I really REALLY like that too. At night, my foster mom and dad let me sleep on the bed with them. I don’t take up very much room so they say it is ok. Sometimes, when they are both sleeping, I will creep under the blankets and snuggle up really close where it’s warm. I like to be close to my people.
I am a bit of a sensitive kind of guy. I don’t like to be startled and I am not really a fan of being outdoors in the dark. I would prefer to go out during the day light or with someone to keep me company so I don’t get scared. My foster mom says that I won’t piddle at night before bed unless she accompanies me to the yard. She is right; I don’t like the night time noises! She is a sport for taking such good care of me.
Although I get along alright with the other animals that live in my foster home, I would probably do better on my own. I like to be the centre of attention, and my foster mom says that I deserve that so why not! I’m not greedy; I just want to be important to someone. Is that too much to ask?
I love to eat. I love my crunchy kibble and the soft food that I am served at dinner. I also really like my treats, especially the dried liver bites that my mom gives me. She makes me wait patiently as I can get a bit excited and may nip at her fingers if I don’t so I am learning to take things nicely instead of snatching them from her. She seems to be much happier with me when I do things this way and I aim to please. I also like the cat treats. Foster mom says NO *sigh*
I am crate trained and this is my safe haven. I don’t like sleeping in my crate at night (and why would I when I can sleep in a nice cozy bed full of toasty people to keep me warm!), but I do fine during the day when my foster family is at work. I also like to go there when I am feeling a bit insecure or I am frightened. It is a nice quiet, safe place for me to rest until I feel like socializing with the universe again. The occasional cat will creep in to check on me when the door is open. I think that they think I am one of them because I am so small, but I keep telling them no way am I a CAT!
I respond best to calm, assertive energy as raised voices make me nervous and want to hide. I can be a bit of a nervous dog when I am afraid, and I need someone who will be patient and gentle with me. I require understanding and someone that knows that I am the way I am for a reason…it is up to you to help me be the best me that I can be. I am pretty awesome already and can only get better with a little proper love and support.
If you think you can give Dexter his perfect new home, please submit an application for consideration.
