My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Weiner and Schnitzel are 5-year-old siblings who were surrendered to the shelter just one day after their owner had acquired them; turns out Schnitzel, the boy, is NOT good with cats, and together the pair was just too energetic for the owner (who got them about 90 miles away from "some guy named John" who was giving them away - so no chance to find the previous owner for a return). The owner who brought them to us said Schnitzel, the girl (with white on her chest), was fine with his cat - but she may have just been giving Weiner the first chance at the "chase the fuzzy prey" game!

All the volunteers love this pair; they are high energy, and sound like squeaky toys when they get excited, but have very sweet personalities. They can be adopted as a pair, but may be easier to train, exercise, and bond with if they are adopted separately.

Schnitzel is a little bit bit less frenetic than Weiner, but still has plenty of energy to spare! They are both calmed by a good belly rub.

If you haven't had dachshunds before, please do a little research - they are adorable, but not overly easy! They tend to be stubborn (and very smart), and are known to chase small furries. They can be diggers, like to burrow in blankets, and (as we have noticed) sometimes howl when lonely.

Schnitzel is housetrained, but doesn't seem to know any other commands yet. We will be working on the basics, like "sit" and "stay" - but he will progress best when working consistently one-on-one with his person. She is pretty good on leash, easy to handle and carry (both she and her brother currently weigh 24 pounds), and is a happy, cuddly girl. Her most annoying current habit is jumping up for attention.

We don't recommend dachshunds for homes with toddlers/very young children; dachshunds' backs are very vulnerable, and being picked up or carried improperly by a well meaning child wanting to hug the doggie can have devastating consequences. Older children who can participate in the dog's training and who can understand how to properly hold the dog should be fine.

Schnitzel comes with a 30-day money-back trial adoption period.

Spay/neuter, worming, microchip and all age-appropriate shots are always completed before placement, and are included in the adoption fee (suggested minimum $75; more gratefully accepted!)

Can't come to Republic? Don't let that stop you! We have monthly transports to both the Seattle area and Spokane, delivering adopted pets to their new owners. If you can add a little to your payment to help us cover our volunteer driver's expenses, that would be great!
