My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Need a dog that is good with cats? Oakley is ~ 6 years of age, 75 pounds and has a thick double coat. She was rescued from the Prattville Animal Shelter in April 2011. She was very aloof of people while there and the shelter noticed she had an injured leg. They called GSRCA for help. BonJovi and Triniti (2 of GSRCA's ambassadors) brought her around to people and we loaded her up and brought her to her foster home.

The vet's examination showed Oakley had been spayed previously however was heartworm positive. The leg injury was old and most likely very painful for her. GSRCA made her an appointment with Dr. Milton, the orthopedic specialist in Birmingham for an evaluation. We elected to do the elbow fusion surgery to get her out of pain, yet allow her to keep her leg for balance. She came through heartworm treatment and orthopedic surgery with flying colors!

Oakley is still a shy girl with people she does not know but very loyal to those she does. She is especially shy around men. We don't believe a home with small children would be suitable due to her shy nature.

Oakley gets around just fine on her leg with no evidence of pain. She is ok some other dogs, however she prefers to be the only dog. She has not yet been tested with cats. A secure fence is required for adoption (not an invisible fence).

This dog is crate trained, spayed or neutered, up to date on shots and HW negative. Adoption application, home visit, and $300 adoption fee are required. Please read our adoption requirements on our home page. Many of your questions can be answered here. We welcome your phone call, but for a faster response, it is best to email us your specific questions. After reviewing GSRCA’s adoption process, please fill out the application completely. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS CANNOT BE PROCESSED! This is the first step in our adoption process. No adoption will be considered or discussed until the application has been received.

Go to www.gsdcentral.petfinder.com Click on the Adoption Application tab at the top of the page.
