My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Poor little Gracie found herself on death row at a high kill southern shelter. Her only crime was that she was pregnant! Her heartless owners had neglected her and then turned her into the shelter to die because they did not want to bother with puppies that could have been prevented. Being a black dog, pregnant, and owner surrendered was a certain death sentence, until our volunteers stumbled upon her. Gracie did go on to have 8 beautiful little puppies the day after her owners gave her up. But Gracie's little body was so malnourished that sadly all her babies died. Gracie was a heroic mother throughout it all, but when the shelter workers removed the last baby from her cage, she cried and cried so pitifully and for so long that she made the shelter workers cry! That is when we knew we had to step in, because little Gracie's life was on the line now that her puppies were gone. She had just hours to live, but we managed to get her out to safety!

Gracie is a very petite little girl weighing only about 29 lbs. She came to us very underweight at 22 lbs., but has gained nicely now that she has lots of love and care in her foster home! The vet would like to see her get to 35 lbs to be at her ideal weight. She is also very young, estimated to be between 12 and 18 months old. She is wonderful with the other dogs in her foster home, and is curious about the cat but gentle at the same time. Gracie is housebroken and is working on her leash skills and has mastered coming when called. She will need an dedicated owner to bring out her full potential through proper training. She is described by her foster mom as "very sweet and loving" and she "loves her people!" She greets her humans at the door wagging her tail happily and she maintains a happy demeanor.

We do not know what breed mix Gracie is, but she resembles a very small black German Shepherd mix. She has a mostly blue tongue but no other distinctive markings (many breeds can have blue tongues!). Her rich, ebony coat is now shiny and silky soft now that she is receiving proper nutrition. She has been dewormed, spayed, microchipped, and has received all her vaccines. She also tested negative for heartworm and is on heartworm prevention and flea prevention.

Gracie is looking for a family with a large, fenced back yard, preferably wooded as she takes great delight in chasing squirrels and rabbits. She LOVES spending time outside with her canine foster brother and sister, but she will not be allowed to be an outdoor dog - she loves to sleep with her family. She is looking for an adopter or family who wants a happy little dog willing to give her at least a 15 year commitment and who will never neglect, abuse, or abandon her again! She would do well with an active family and we believe she would do fine with children as she has shown absolutely no aggressive tendencies whatsoever.

Gracie has had a rough start to her very young life, so if you are that person or family willing to provide her with unconditional love for the rest of her days, please email MJsAnimalSanctuary@gmail.com and request an adoption application. Adopters are subject to reference check, vet references, home visit, and a meet and greet with all 2 and 4 legged family members. Adoption fee applies.
