My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

GUMBO is a 16 month old neutered black male Lab who weighs 52 pounds. He is a beautiful , shiny black lab with small patches of white on his rear paws. He has lots of energy and stamina, is smart, strong, fast, jumps very high and is very loving. He loves food of any kind, is very food motivated and responds well to food-based training. He is generous with his kisses and will welcome you home with unbridled excitement. He loves sitting on laps, eating ice (will sit patiently by fridge), eating peanut butter out of kongs, licking faces, playing in the woods, fetching sticks, riding in the car, and walking/running. Gumbo is uncomfortable with strangers and will need slow and patient introductions to new people - with food! The perfect atmosphere for Gumbo is one where there is limited/controlled interactions with strangers. He learns quickly and can be won over in relatively short order with food, particularly chopped up hot dogs. Gumbo is very scared when he goes to the vet, so you need to go EXTREMELY SLOW with him.

Update (01/11): Rico continues to make progress. He needs slow introductions to visitors. He is excited at first but calms down quickly. He also gets excited during walks, but correction and rewarding go a long way. We have been making him sit when cars, bikes, or people go by, and he is getting better and gets a lot of praise for being calm. Rico is crated when we're not home, and he does well. When we're home, he loves to follow us around and play with the resident dog. He loves the human touch and wants to be petted, and will sit on your feet or lean against you. Rico is looking for an all-adult family with another dog who will continue reinforcing everything that he's learned to make him a confident pup.

Update (12/10): Gumbo has been doing good. He knows the basic commands. We have taught him to wait after his food bowl is put down before eating. He also waits and stays when you tell him. He is very loving and we can do anything to him now that he's comfortable with us. He gets along great with our dog and we dog sat another dog for 4 days and he got along great with her too. He is getting better when people come over to the house. He will come up and sniff them and you can walk by him if you ignore him. He let a visitor throw the ball for him and was bringing it back for more. Sudden movements towards him still startle him. We all sat down in the living room to watch TV and Gumbo laid on the floor and was fine. He loves to go for rides and loves the backyard and will come in when called. Gumbo needs slow introductions to new visitors or family members. Having them give him treats and ignore him works very well. He is crated during the day. During the evening he is left out and does very well and will cuddle right up with you. He is a great alarm clock and is full of energy and ready to start the day! He must be adopted where there is another young and playful dog. He is approved for adults only
