My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cookie and Maya were destined to be sisters and we would be so happy if they
could be adopted together......
Many moons ago, Cookie came to us as a wee-pup with her 2 siblings. Both
her siblings found a forever home, but Cookie did not. Thankfully, she was
fortunate enough to be placed into our terrific dog playgroup where she enjoyed
the company of many young dogs like herself, including young Maya. As months
passed, most of the other dogs in the playgroup were adopted and Cookie and Maya
remained best buddies and looked forward to seeing each other in the yard each
day. Finally, Cookie was chosen by a family and it was a truly great day!
Sadly, we got a phone call shortly after her adoption that Cookie had escaped
her owner in the Bronx. Dedicated volunteers grabbed her BFF Maya from her
kennel and went on walking tours of the Bronx in hopes we would find sweet
little Cookie. This went on for days and we were all so worried about her since
she is a shy and quiet dog who does not always approach people she doesn’t know.
We were relieved when we learned Cookie had been found by a good samaritan and
was safe and sound, but her adoptive family was sadly no longer were interested
in keeping her.
Shelter playdates resumed until it was Maya’s turn to be welcomed into a home
where she lived for many months. Cookie struggled with Maya’s absence and, no
longer a pup, she found it hard to make new dogs friends. It is common for more
adult age dogs to become somewhat selective on what dogs they prefer to spend
time with and we knew this was what was happening with Cookie.
What happened next was unthinkable- We got a phone call from a shelter in
Rockland county reporting they picked up stray dog that appeared to be Maya.
Upon further investigation, we learned that Maya’s previous adopters did not
want to take care of her so dropped her off in a far away wooded area and drove
away. Without hesitation, we took her back into Mount Vernon Animal Shelter
since we knew after her ordeal, she would find more comfort returning to
familiar surroundings. It had been a long time since Maya and Cookie had seen
each other and both girls were no longer as fond of all dogs as they were in
their youth....so we did not know what to expect when they were reunited. The
photos below tell the rest of story- They are like old friends, immediately
thrilled to see each other, both a little older, both with some tough stories to
tell one another on how they were lost and alone, and both happy to be back
running together.
We would love these 2 lovely gals to be placed together, preferably with a
fenced in yard where they could spend hours playing and be forever safe and
loved. If you think you can provide a real FOREVER home for Cookie and Maya,
please come and meet them any day between 11-2pm.
