Wookie is a 2 year old physically disabled 70lb female purebred Rottweiler. She is an energetic, loving, and smart dog with loads of personality. Everyone who meets her instantly falls in love!
Wookie was left in an apartment after an eviction for approx 1-2 weeks. She was discovered when the Sheriff and landlord arrived to do a lockout. Before that, it is reported that her previous owner threw a toy out of a 3rd story window and she jumped out after it. She broke her left front carpus and tore the radial nerve of her right front leg, and received no veterinary care for these injuries.
Wookie's physical therapist predicts she will not regain use of her right front leg. She has a custom orthopedic brace for her front left carpus that she wears during walks or play. This joint is weakened from the old break and the brace provides extra support. She will gladly lay down and allow you to put on the brace - she knows that typically means she is going for a walk!
Wookie has been in foster care for 2 months. She lives with two spayed female dogs and a cat and gets along with everyone famously. She requires a proper slow introduction to new dogs as she is easily excitable. She loves to play and would love a doggie playmate! Probably someone more on the submissive side. She loves playing fetch and playing tug with her rope toy (or whipping it around by herself). She exhibits mild resource guarding with her toys, but with patience and continued training this should not be an issue. She exhibits resource guarding with food and should be fed in her crate/separately from other animals.
Thus far Wookie has been good around men, women, children and strangers. Because of her energy level and size, I do not recommend she go to a house with small children. She also really loves horses.
Wookie would do best with a family that is active and has time to invest in her. She is a young, highly energetic dog. She does well with multiple walks per day and quality play time. She needs a family that will commit to continuing her positive reinforcement training.
Wookie is crate trained and housebroken. She responds well to sit, stay, down, paw and crate commands. She is up to date on all shots, is spayed, microchipped, negative for heartworm, flea-free, and negative for lyme and other tick-born diseases.
Wookie has not seen a neurological or orthopedic specialist. If her new family has the financial capabilities, seeing these specialists would provide more insight into her condition and possible treatment options. If her new family is not financially capable, I think she will thrive regardless. Her new family does need to be willing and able to get her amputation surgery if/when the time comes. This surgery is not necessary as long her paralyzed limb is not causing her any health or quality of life complications.
Disabilities aside, Wookie is a wonderful dog deserving of a secure, stable and loving place to call home. Anyone who welcomes her to their family will be filled with years of joy and laughter.
