My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Bear! He is a miracle of a dog. He was taken to our local Animal Control after being found shot in the head. After a few days at the vet, his wounds did not look as bad as expected although he did lose vision in his left eye. Other than that he has made a full physical recovery! One of our foster moms knew that he was special and took him into her home. She says that Bear is all manners in the house. He gets along well with all the other dogs – big and small – and he is house broken. He has not been around cats at his foster home, so we don’t know how he would react to them, but he has a gentle nature and may acclimate fine. We do know that does not like chickens or other types of barnyard fowl and will chase them if given the chance. Understandably, he does not care for loud noises (fireworks or gunshots) and can get startled by sudden movements, probably due to his limited vision. He likes all people, but tends to really be a ladies man and warms up quickly to the girls. We think that Bear would probably to best in a home where the atmosphere is laid back and calm, with a nice quiet place to lay in the sun and live the good life. He likes to ride in the car, does well on a leash and is housetrained. He quickly mastered “sit” and is working on other commands. We think that Bear may be about 5 years old and estimate his birthday at around 5/1/2008. We think he is a Black Labrador/Rottweiler Mix and weighs 70-80 lbs. But don’t let that size fool you! His foster mom says that he is a big snuggle bug and is the most awesome dog! Bear is neutered, up to date on vaccinations (parvo, distemper, hepatitis and parainfluenza), kennel cough and rabies vaccination. He is heartworm negative, takes a monthly heartworm preventative and monthly flea preventative. Are you ready for the best foot warmer ever this winter? Bear would make the best! Please, you MUST visit the following link BEFORE emailing for further information. If you'd like to find out more information about our adoption procedure or to apply for this dog visit http://www.poochesonthemove.net/dixie-pet-underground.html

Or e-mail adoptions@dixiepetunderground.org to request an adoption application, or visit our website at www.dixiepetunderground.org.

Once we receive your complete application, an adoption counselor will call you within 48 hours of receipt of the application. During the adoption interview, the adoption counselor will tell you more about the dog/puppy and our adoption processes, as well as answer any questions you have.

Dogs and puppies are up-to-date on their vaccinations, spayed/neutered, de-wormed, treated for fleas/ticks and heartworm negative before leaving rescue. You will receive complete medical records for your dog and puppy at the time of adoption.

The adoption fee is $450 and covers the cost of all veterinary care and transportation to your area.

Our dogs and puppies are delivered via a USDA-certified van transport and receive an Interstate Health Certificate -- issue by a licensed, accredited veterinarian -- no more than 10 days before the dog or puppy leaves rescue.

All of our dogs and puppies come into rescue from the "death row" of animal shelters in the south, or are owner surrenders or strays who were "pound bound" before coming into rescue. Adopting a dog or puppy from the Dixie Pet Underground Railroad means you are truly part of a partnership to save the life of the dog or puppy that you welcome into your family.

Our dogs or puppies are fostered at our rescue in Tennessee, meaning that it isn't possible to meet the dog or puppy before adoption. Our adoption counselor works with you to do everything possible to ensure that there is a good match between the family and the dog. We have had several hundred dogs adopted using this process and most of the time, it results in happy puppies and happy people.

If for any reason an adoption is not successful, the Dixie Pet Underground Railroad will work with the adopter to find the best possible solution for the dog and the adopting family.

We can provide contact information for adopters in your area who can tell you about their experience partnering with the Underground Railroad to save the life of a dog and make the animal a part of their family.

We look forward to hearing from you and working with you to find the right dog for your family!
