My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Arcia : 8 year-old female fox red Lab

Hi, My name is Arcia. I was a breeding dog for 5 years and thank god the lady decided I was too old to have anymore puppies. (I only had 4 litters so it was not so bad but I was tired of raising all those puppies.) My owner found me a wonderful family who has four kids to live with who are all under 8 years of age. They would climb all over me, pull on me, give me pets, take food from me and I was always my calm self around all of them. They were so busy with all those kids and they would travel out of town a lot so they would have their mom watch me. (I was so happy with her!) Since their mom lived alone and I seemed to love it there so much, they let her keep me. I have been with her two years and I can't believe I am looking for another new home - it makes me very sad! My owner called Lab Rescue last week to see if they could help her find me a new home. This really confused me why I would need a new home. I just heard the people talking and my owner will not be coming home from the hospital. I thought my owner just went out of town, I did not realize she was sick. (My owner called Lab Rescue last week and since she called them she had to go to the hospital. I heard them talking that she has a tumor on her heart and it is time for hospice. The nice Lab Rescue lady came over to meet me and told them that they could find me a wonderful new home. They told my current owner this and she is so happy that I will be taken care of. She was very upset to think I would have to go to a shelter.)

My current owner is 84 years old and she takes care of elderly people. She loves me and I love her. She understands that I am not a bouncy lab, in your face, constantly needing to be petted lab. I am a lab that is very calm and reserved. I love going for my two - three 20 minute walks a day. (My owner is not well so we would only go for short walks. I would like to go for longer walks but I would need to build up to these.) When I go for walks I just love to sniff around and find a place to go to the bathroom. Dogs and people will walk by but I do not care so much about them. I do look up but I continue on my business. I a very easy to walk on the leash and the owner drops it at times and I just walk along side her - I know my way home. I am fine with all dogs but I do not go up to them to greet or play with them. I look their way, I will sniff the air to see what they are all about but I love being a dog that is comfortable with being on her own. I love people and get along with everyone but I do not run up or walk up to greet them. I will sniff around but then I love just going back to my bed to lay down. You can come to my bed and lay treats down and I will eat them and I am very gentle with food. I love being petted and I sure loved the attention the nice Lab Rescue lady gave to me when she came over. She petted my ears and back and as much as I could show her - I really enjoyed it. I am fine on car rides, I am housetrained and I would say I am a very easy dog. I do not bark and I am content on my bed or in the back yard if you need to leave me alone. I am very healthy and I have no health issues. I am current on my shots, microchipped, heartworm negative and spayed. I am in excellent shape - maybe could lose 3-5 pounds but that should be easy. Could you please call the nice Lab Rescue person and come and meet me as I am left alone in my owner's home for longer periods than I like right now. (I have the nice neighbor that is coming over to walk and feed me and my owners 12 children are in and out of the house on a regular basis but I would like to find my new forever home.)

If you would like to meet this sweet girl please call rescue rep Liz at 415-613-6374.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
