Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Vivaldi is a small, one year old black lab/retriever mix who weighs about 40 pounds. She arrived with 4 puppies, who we named after the four seasons. Unfortunately, Vivaldi could be the poster dog for neglect through omission. She was not spayed, and had pups when she was still a puppy herself. She was not kept on heartworm preventative, and tested positive for heartworm disease. She was not fed enough, and came to us malnourished. She was not vaccinated, and became severely ill with viral pneumonia possibly due to distemper--and had to be hospitalized. She had mange and yeast infections in her ears. And if that's not enough, one eye doesn't look straight, due to a birth defect.
Vivaldi is one of those dogs that stretches a rescue group's finances to the breaking point with her need for expensive medical treatment. Dogs like this make us ask the tough question--is she worth it? And in this case, the answer is resounding YES. We think Vivaldi is more than worth the investment, based on what her foster home says.
'Vivaldi looks like a black version of my golden retriever, and has that temperament that makes labs and retrievers such wonderful companions. When Vivaldi first arrived I was horrified at her condition. She was so thin her bones and ribs were showing, and in places she had no hair. Turns out she had mange and yeast infections in both ears. She didn't have much milk, so her puppies were eating all her food. I fed them separately and after a week she gained 6 pounds! Then she and all 4 pups got sick with what turned out to be viral pneumonia. Luckily the emergency vet clinic knew what to do, and she pulled through. Sadly, two of her pups did not. It was a real roller coaster of getting better, then worse, then better, then worse. But now she seems fully recovered.
In spite of her hunger and pain, Vivaldi hasn't lost her trust in humanity. She never snapped at a puppy or growled at a person. She never had an accident in the house or her crate, even after weeks of antibiotics. When she got so sick I had to take her to the ER, she sat by me in the front seat and gave me her paw to hold. The last time I fostered a dog with a personality like this, I adopted her!
Vivaldi is a treasure, but one I can't keep. She loves kids, other dogs, long walks, and life itself. She deserves a future that's better than her past, and a forever family of her own."
Vivaldi's adoption fee of $300 includes: vet exam, DAPP (distemper combo) vaccination, bordetella vaccination, flea & tick preventative, rabies vaccination, heartworm preventative, deworming, and microchip. It also includes her heartworm treatment and spay if done after adoption.
