My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

CHECK OUT MY VIDEO!

Hey there! ...well, Hazel wants to talk directly to you but she's too scared to do so, so she asked her foster mom to tell everyone about her. Hazel is a beautiful brindle dane/mastiff mix with fur as soft as silk. Hazel came to us from a NY shelter where she was physically dumped by her drunken owners at the door of the shelter (they literally picked her up and dropped her there, she was too scared to even move).

We think Hazel lived her entire life (all 2-3 yrs or so) either in a pen/outdoor run or a basement pen. Hazel struggles every day to overcome her fear of people and her environment (let's face it, when you've been penned in your whole life, everything is scary to you). You can see that she wants so badly to be a "real" dog--she approaches her people if they're sitting and leans in for pets and scritches, but as soon as they stand or move too quickly for her, Hazel retreats to her safe haven (crate or den area in the bedroom). The saddest, and paradoxically, happiest times are when Hazel lets down her guard and rubs against you or runs in the backyard with the dogs--she's a joyous soul under all of that baggage she came in with.

Hazel needs a quiet home with other large, male dogs (she only feels safe with other large dogs around) and a patient person who can encourage her to explore and be affectionate without pushing her to go too fast--and one who can let Hazel determine what's too fast. She needs someone who is home more often than not, and someone who has patience to bring out her true self. She's going to make a fabulous dog for that special someone who wants to rescue a dog who truly needs rescuing. We can see the glimmer of light that is Hazel's true self, just struggling to emerge. Won't you open your heart and home to this sweet and special girl? Hazel needs you!! And we're pretty sure it's going to be a case of Who Saved Who? She's one special girl who needs her chance at life.
