My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dakota's story is one of survival and the sheer will to live. Dakota arrived at our rescue following a call from a woman who said there were two dogs that she had been feeding for awhile---but they weren't her dogs---and she wanted to animal control officer to pick them up. The officer picked up a male and female who had become friends and who were somehow surviving together. The male is this beautiful guy named Dakota. We were told by the woman that she witnessed Dakota being hit by a car, but he walked away from the accident. The car sped off without a care to the injured dog and Dakota found a place of hiding to endure the pain and agony that he must have been going through. Somehow, someway, this dog survived the extent of his injuries, the infection that surely he had without treatment, and not only survived, but appears to be thriving at this point. We are including photos of his front left paw which almost appears to have been severed. There is a deep cut that is completely healed across the toes. The joint there is knarled and fused and is causing him no pain. At rest when standing, he will hold his paw up. But the paw does not hinder his movement at all. In fact, he can run with the best of any dogs and walks without a limp or even a cause to stop and look at his paw, until you see him standing still and holding the paw up. Across his right side is a scar that goes the length of his body. The veterinarian who neutered him and examined the healed injuries estimates that this scar had been a huge slice that was opened up on Dakota's side that was open and exposing muscle below. The scar is completely healed and very smooth, but possibly will remain mostly without hair. I took Dakota to the vet's office for evaluation and neutering. You would not want a better dog in the car with you. He curled up on the seat next to me and fell asleep with my hand under his head. If I stopped petting him, he would inch closer and closer over the console to get me to continue petting him. He is a sweet, wonderful dog. We can't let this guy who has suffered so much go without finding a great home that will love him. He is not in any pain and is on no additional medications for his injuries. In fact, he is absolutely no trouble at all. He loves walking on his leash and getting out to play. The foot does not hamper him in the least and he would be ready to fetch a ball at a moment's notice. If you ever wanted to help a dog in need, please consider our Dakota. He is a beautiful dog, but his scars from his past would cause people to turn away. But we have found that these dogs in particular are even more grateful to their rescuers and the love the offer is priceless. Dakota is ready to travel to his new home at anytime. He would love to be waiting on Santa Paws under the tree at your house on Christmas eve.
Additional photos of Dakota and his healed injuries are available.
