Shelter FAQs

The South Suburban Humane Society is a 501(c )(3) organization that was started in 1970, serving the animal welfare needs of the entire south suburbs of Chicago. In the beginning, we handled all rescues, adoptions and provided foster care out of private homes. Since November 1973, our organization has been operating a 10,000 square foot open-door animal shelter in Chicago Heights, Illinois. For over fifty years, our organization has helped tens of thousands of animals. We offer extensive outreach programs including humane education, and community outreach events. We also operate a resale shop located in Steger, Illinois that promotes our organization, our animals and provide much needed income to support our humane work. The Mission of the South Suburban Humane Society is to protect and promote the well being of pets and their people in our community and beyond.
Our shelter services the south Chicagoland area. We adopt animals region wide, as adopters have come to us from Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana.
